Diseases To learn about disease we will cover: • Classification: Domains/Kingdoms • Origins of Life • Difference between virus and bacteria • Bacteria • Viruses
Biological Classification To work with the diversity of life we need a system of biological classification that names and orders organisms in a logical manner. Two characteristics: • Assign a universally accepted name to each organism • Place organisms into groups that have real biological meaning
Binomial nomenclature • Carolus Linnaeus, Swedish botanist • International system • He grouped organisms by body structure • Groups = taxa (singular is taxon) • Taxonomy = science of naming and grouping organisms
Taxonomy Less specific Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species More specific
How to group… • Closely related – classified together • Analogous structures only – different groups • Biochemical similarities, DNA & RNA • Cytochrome C (most organisms have it but nucleotide sequences vary between them)
Taxonomy *Domain* Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
Bacillus configurations • Anthrax • Gram + • Streptobacillus
