RICH detector for CLASS12 E.Cisbani INFN-Rome and ISS CLASS12-RICH Working Group Meeting 07 August 2008 E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Hadron PID in Class12 Baseline • p/K PID rely on LTCC performance in 3-5 GeV/c • (No K/p PID in 5-8 GeV/c) RICH E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Which RICH? • Liquid Radiator (Freon) • Cover up to 5 GeV/c • Relatively inexpensive (proximity focusing RICH) • Aerogel + Gas Radiators • Cover up to 12 GeV/c • Very expensive Cost: Aerogel RICH ~ 5 x Proximity Focusing RICH E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Location of the RICH ? • Replace part of LTCC: • No impact on baseline design • Nobody will probably complain • Large space available (and to be covered!) • Add to HTCC: • Impact on baseline design • somebody will probably complain E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
LTCC Sector About 6.2 m2 entrance window 1 m depth E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Proximity Focusing RICH E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Proximity RICH Performance 1/2 Gap:600 mm Freon Thick: 20-30 mm (?) Resolution: 1.5-1.8 mrad Channels: 70 k (Assume full detection acceptance) E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Proximity RICH: Performance 2/2 2 cm radiator: p/K separation up to 4.2 GeV/c with superior rejection (1:1000) and high K efficiency (93%) with 3 cm radiator: same performance up to 4.7 GeV/c E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Proximity RICH in LTCC • The RICH replaces 2 adjacent sectors of LHCC Two radiators One photon detector Entrance window ~ 12 m2 Detection area ~ 16 m2 Readout Chs ~ 80000 E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
HallA Proximity RICH Now in EEL/122 Will be used in the Transversity experiment next October E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Quarz planarity e parallelism 0.1 mm E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Evaporation Fac. & QE Meas. CsI is evaporated on the pad panel in the evaporation chamber: 120h x 110r cm2 (vacuum 10-7 mbar) E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Recent CsI Evaporation (July08) E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Hall A RICH in Hypernuclear Exp. (2003-2005) K/p rejection ~ 1/1000 F. Garibaldi et al. NIM A502 (2003) E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Photon Detector • Replace MWPC with GEM Chamber • faster, • higher gain, • stability at high rate HBD @ Phenix E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Costs (!very preliminary!) Class12/Halla Radiator 36-48 (min.-max. volume), 24 (surface) Detector 13 (surface), 4 (chs) GEM ~ 1.2 x MWPC k$ (estimation from Lire, CHF, $ and Euro) E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Valery Kubarovsky Aerogel in HTCC • Main Issues: • Aerogel add 2-3% X0 • Online trigger may be challenging • HTCC design shall be revised • Impact on tracking ? • Cost probably higher than LTCC option (but full acceptance) E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Aerogel RICH: successful in HERMES One HERMES RICH detector soon at U.Va. • Pixel 2.3 • Mirror0.6 • Point emiss.0.7 • n disp. 0.5 • Chromatic 1.3 • Forw.Scatt. 0.4 • Surface 0.4 • Total (calc.)/pe 2.9 • Total (exp.)/pe 3.3 • Npe (exp.) 10 E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
t 1996 2004 ’80s Aerogel RICH / expected to be better in future Aerogel improvements Matsushita 100x100x20mm3 n=1.050 Aerogel cost ~ 4 $/cm3 … and smaller pixel size Dalla Torre / RICH04 E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
Conclusion? • Proximity RICH in 2 LTCC sectors should provide: p/K rejection better than • 1:1000 up to 4.2 GeV/c (worst case) • 1:1000 up to 4.7 GeV/c (best case) • 1:100 up to 5 GeV/c (K efficiency > 90%) • Costs about $ 2.5M • Aerogel option should be investigated further E. Cisbani / Class12-RICH
