Beginning Activities • Title today’s lesson: Eisenhower Wages the Cold War • Video Activity: Putin and Crimea (Modern Day Cold War?) • Mission Statement: To prepare you for a life of responsible citizenship • Daily Expectations: • No one leaves once class has begun. • Come in quietly and get to work immediately • Pay attention and be respectful • No phones • No food or drinks other than water • Do your work • Give AP quality effort • 5 bonus points for supplies

  3. Eisenhower Wages the Cold War Chapter 28 The Onset of the Cold War, 1945-1960

Eisenhower & His Administration • Wanted to relax tensions with the Soviets • Cut the military budget overall • Diverted more resources to air force • Sec. of State John Foster Dulles pushed for massive retaliation should the Soviets make too drastic a move. • Eisenhower, though, work on disarmament with the Soviets.

  5. Entanglement in Indochina • U.S. had supported the French in Indochina. • The Chinese gave support to the communist in Vietnam led by Ho Chi Minh (Vietminh). • The Vietminh almost pushed the French out. • An international conference divided Vietnam at the 17th parallel. • The communist controlled the North and the French and Americans supported the South.

Containing China • Ike hoped a firm approach would stop communist expansion in Asia. • The communist Chinese seized islands that belonged to the nationalists on Taiwan. • America signed a protection treaty with Taiwan and hinted of the use of nukes. • The Communist Chinese backed off. • A rift grew between the communists in Russia and China because Russia didn’tgo to their aid.

Turmoil in the Middle East • Egyptian leader Nasser seized the British occupied Suez Canal. • England and France’s economy depended on oil from the Persian Gulf. • They invaded against the wishes of Ike. • Ike warned the Soviets not to intervene. • England and France pulled back. • America became the main western influence in the Middle East.

  8. Waging Peace • In October 1958, Ike and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev agreed to end nuclear weapons testing. • Ike was criticized for not spending enough on defense, creating a “missile gap.” • An American U-2 spy plane was shot down over Soviet territory, ruining any hopes of further peace deals.
