  4. Notes Activity: The Great Society • Using your iPad or pages 886-87 & 90 explain the importance of the following reforms: • Medicare • Medicaid • Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 • Voting Rights Act of 1965

  5. Johnson in Action • Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated JFK on November 22, 1963. • Lyndon Baines Johnson was sworn in immediately. • Johnson knew Congress better than Kennedy. • He sought consensus, not ideological purity. • He pushed through the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that integrated public facilities, established the Equal Opportunity Commission, and protected African American voting rights.

  6. The Election of 1964 • Johnson declared a “war on poverty” to improve his campaign chances. • He chose Hubert Humphrey not RFK as his running mate to set himself apart from the Kennedys. • The Republicans chose Sen. Barry Goldwater of Arizona who rejected the welfare state. He lost because he attacked popular programs (ex. Social Security). • Johnson won by taking the middle ground by advocating for a balanced budget and liberal reform (The Great Society).

  7. The Vietnam Dilemma • Johnson continued Kennedy’s policy of economic and military assistance. • On August 2, 1964, the North Vietnamese fired on two different American destroyers. • Johnson responded with air strikes. • He also asked Congress for the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution to respond to aggression. • His response showed North Vietnam that America would protect South Vietnam, and it prevented Republicans from saying he was weak on containment.

  8. Escalation/Stalemate • Escalation • American began bombing North Vietnam. • When air strikes didn’t cut off supplies, LBJ sent in ground troops. • Johnson sacrificed the Great Society to fight the war. • Stalemate • Air attacks did little to hurt the unindustrialized North. • The Viet Cong in the South had the advantage. • Civilian casualties made America look bad. • The war reached a bloody stalemate.

  9. Ending Activity • Secondary Source Activity: The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution • Make sure the floor is clean • Connect to our objectives: How does this prepare you for life and the future?
