Sexuality & Teen Pregnancy StatisticsSource: www.cdc.gov , www.yrbs.gov • MOST girls who engage in sexual activity (especially before age 15) admit they wish they had waited. • Pressure from boyfriends (75%) report that the reason they have sex is because their boyfriends want them to. • A sexually active teen that does not use birth control has a 90% chance of becoming pregnant within one year. • 80% of teen pregnancies are unintended • Despite the decrease in teen pregnancies in the U.S., about 820,000 teens become pregnant each year.
Abstinence • Abstinence is the only way to protect you & your partner from: - sexuality transmitted diseases - unwanted pregnancies
Reasons Why Teen Pregnancy Occurs • Rape: Unwanted/ uninvited sexual intercourse • Family member or family friend • Strangers • Boyfriend 2. Unprotected sexual intercourse 3. Inconsistent use of birth controlWHY is there inconsistent use? • Lack of education • Uncomfortable using birth control methods • Inability to access reliable birth control

Abstinence-only education: • Abstinence-only education omits any information that is taught about birth control. • Some state governments forbid any sort of teen sex education in schools. • Teens that experiment won’t have the opportunities to learn about birth control methods & are more likely to become sexually active and/or contract a sexually transmitted disease
Financial Costs of Teen Pregnancy • The U.S. spends $7 billion each year due to the costs of teen pregnancy • Only 1/3 of teenage mothers complete high school and receive their diplomas. • 80% of unmarried teen mothers end up on welfare. • The daughters of teen mothers are 22% more likely than their peers to become teen moms themselves. • Sons of teen moms have a 13% greater chance of ending up in prisonas compared to their peers.
