Social Networks Versus ESNs ESNsfocus on the employee and allow you to instantly connect, communicate, and collaborate with people from across your organization wherever you are. Social networks focus on the individual and allow you to instantly connect and communicate with people from across the worldwherever you are.
Traditional Systems Create Silos Different organizational functions sit in different systems (for example, Sales sits in customer relationship management (CRM), Finance in enterprise resource planning (ERP)). This often prevents employees from connecting with each other. Email silos the information shared between small groups of people, which are typically those you work with on a daily basis. This prevents information sharing across the organization. Traditional systems do not allow you to tap into tribal knowledge or easily locate expertise across the organization.
Enterprise Social Networks Connect ESNs allow you to connect with anyone in the organization, no matter what department they are in or what business application they use. They also enable you to search conversations that have already occurred, accessing others’ expertise and tribal knowledge.

We Build Yammer with Intention We build features with users in mind. • We talk to our customers and brainstorm different ways to solve their problems. • Our team translates the best ideas into a set of features that make up our product roadmap. We think big, but start small. • We design a plan to build just the core aspects of a feature. • We aim to deliver new features to users in just a few weeks’ time. • Delivering features in small increments helps us course-correct as necessary.
We Form Teams, Test, and Refine We form a team and build. • After planning, we assemble a small team of engineers, designers, and product managers. • This team works together to build the feature as quickly as they can. We test every new feature by employing A/B testing. • We launch the feature to a subset of users and compare their experience with that of users who don’t have the feature. • We control all the variables in the test, helping to ensure that our data is accurate. We refine the feature based on data. • We examine core metrics, such as engagement and retention. • If the experiment group shows higher rates of engagement and retention, we consider the new feature a winner.
Why Do We Build This Way? Our iterative approach helps users adapt to new features gradually over time. Our rapid-release cycle of building, testing, analyzing, and iterating allows us to meet needs as they arise. We want our users get access to new features instantly, so we made sure that Yammer lives in the cloud. There is never a need to upgrade or install anything, and the cloud makes it convenient for us to measure all of our test results across different organizations.
