  1. Equipment Make-up Lab

  2. Station 1 Using the diagrams and materials provided, fold the filter paper and separate the solid from the liquid.

  3. Station 1

  4. Station 2 • Using the materials pictured below, describe the technique you would use to dissolve one sugar cube in water. • ***Remember to use proper lab technique when heating.

  5. Station 3 • Fill the tall, thin container that stands up by itself with 10 mL of water. Pour this water into the other tall, thin container that cannot stand up on its own. Place this container with water into the short, wide container (to hold it up) and take the temperature of the water. Using the balance, measure out 3.0 g of ammonium chloride and add it to the water. Place the rubber item in the top to seal the water in and then lightly shake the solution for 5- 10 seconds. Take the temperature again. What happened to the temperature? • Initial Temp: 23⁰C • Final Temp: 6⁰C

  6. Station 3

  7. Station 4 • Fill the labeled dropper with 0.1M HCl and put 25 drops of the HCl into the test tube. • Add 1 drop of phenolphthalein and gently swirl the test tube. • Fill the other labeled dropper with 0.1M NaOH and add the NaOH, one drop at a time****, to the HCl mixture until the liquid stays pale pink. • ******You must swirl the test tube as you add the NaOH and count the drops of NaOH as they are added. • Determine how much NaOH you added (in mL) by using the following conversion factor: • 1 drop = .05 mL HCl after phenolphthalein was added Solution after 31 drops of NaOH was added

  8. Station 4 Materials

  9. Station 5 • Place one ice cube into the white bowl. On the hot plate, heat the white bowl with the ice cube until the cube completely changes to liquid. Using the metal “things”, place the hot bowl on the wire “thing” to cool. Do not touch hot equipment with your bare hands!!

  10. Station 6 • Place 1 small scoop of baking soda on the clear disk. Using the labeled dropper, add 5 drops of vinegar to the disk. Replace the stopper on the container of vinegar. What do you observe? During Reaction
