BGSU CMLA Professional Development Compiled by Erica Jacobs and Dustin Sabo
Introduction Through out the 2009-2010 academic year, the BGSU CMLA chapter has offered numerous professional development opportunities for its members. Within this portfolio, we have highlighted 6 events in detail, and attached additional evidence on group outings and presentations. Our alignment to the NMSA Performance Standards for Initial Middle Level Teacher Preparation has also been included in our event descriptions. It is our hope that other CMLA chapters will gain insight into how to better serve their members and help them grow professionally by adapting these projects as they see fit.
National Middle School Association National Conference • BGSU CMLA organized and sent 23 members to the NMSA Conference in Indianapolis, IN on November 5-7, 2009 • The organization saw the opportunity of attending a national conference that was easily accessible as a way to further develop member knowledge and experience bases • This project aligns with NMSA Standard 7 by helping members develop professional roles and behaviors through their experiences and interactions at a conference attended by current middle level professionals • After the conference, attendees presented their experiences at a general meeting to those members who could not attend, and shared the resources and tools they discovered
Ohio Middle Level Association State Conference • BGSU CMLA organized and sent 10 members to the OMLA State Conference in Columbus, OH on February 18-19, 2010 • The organization saw the opportunity of attending a state conference that was easily accessible as a way to further develop member knowledge and experience bases • This project aligns with NMSA Standard 7 by helping members develop professional roles and behaviors through their experiences and interactions at a conference attended by current middle level professionals • BGSU CMLA member Dustin Sabo attended an OMLA Executive Board meeting discussing the successes of the conference and how to improve for the next conference. Other members shared their findings and resources with group members.
Bowling Green Teen Central • BGSU CMLA members facilitate lessons that deal with middle level issues such as peer pressure at a local teen center • The organization felt it would be beneficial to offer members the opportunity to work with middle level students outside of the classroom • The project aligns with Standards 1, 5, 6, and 7. Through our work with adolescents, we better understand their developmental needs, how to instruct them, and the importance of community involvement. • Members who have attended have expressed their frustration with working with a diverse group of students in an atmosphere where students volunteer to participate but feel they are better prepared to take on the role of a teacher in a classroom setting in the future.
