  5. Some Interesting Info… • FutureGen was a US government project announced by President George W. Bush in 2003 •  The initial plan involved the construction of a near zero-emissions coal-fueled power plant • Planned to produce hydrogen and electricity while using carbon capture and underground storage • In December 2007, Mattoon Township, Coles County, was chosen as the site for the plant from among four finalists in Illinois and Texas • The goal was to prove that coal could be burned to make electricity while the carbon dioxide that makes coal a pollution problem could be captured and safely stored • The project promised 1,300 construction jobs and 150 high-skilled positions • However In 2010, after a number of setbacks, the city of Mattoon backed out of the project • Sorry To Break Your Hopes!
