Socialization…. • A process which comes about because of learning from being with other people. • Three types of socialization…. • Social life makes us human…. • We must also pay attention to how society is organized, where we fit into it, and how our place in it gives rise to experiences that make us what we are.
Gathering Meanings…. • Because we are not isolated from others as we mature, we have learned from other human beings a language that allows us to get a mental grip on the world, which makes sense, and a place full of meaningful events, situations, and objects.
Taking on Identities…. • In learning your name you became aware of yourself as an object. You learned that you were a creature that could be talked about, thought about, praised, scolded, loved, hated, etc. • Being sociologically understanding, we see that the meanings we give to ourselves always arise out of social life. • Our identities locate us relative to others and tell them how to treat us. Announcing our identities allows others to interact with us in predictable ways.
Socialization-Roots & Outcomes…. • We have a dynamic nature, an active nature in our social lives. • The three components of our dynamic nature are symbols, self, and mind, which we take on because of socialization.
Conclusion…. • Acquiring language and developing self-awareness are essential to becoming human and to being able to function in the social world. Gathering meanings to one’s self—that is, becoming known to one’s self and to others as a particular kind of person—is also part of becoming human. • The result of socialization then allows us to do things together in ways that make human beings abler and more willing to create good lives for themselves and for others.
