HOW SERVICE PROJECTS WORK • Sign up for the project on Teacher Web. (CTNHS) • Come prepared and appropriately dressed for projects (Wear NHS shirts when received.) • Parent involvement • Make sure that the officer present at the project documents that you were there.
Focusedon FreshmEn • Your tutoring day will be the same day you scheduled for the month of September.
WHILE TUTORING • DO NOT explain things on the board. Write it down, so that the student can have something to refer back to when it’s time to study on their own. • Avoid standing over the student’s shoulder. Sit next to them, so that it does not seem like you’re crowding over them.
WHILE TUTORING… • Help them, but not work for them. Give the students a chance to solve problems on their own. Don’t be the only one doing work, even if the student says he/she understands it. • “I don’t have any homework” or “I already understand this.” Even if the tutee says that he or she doesn’t need to be tutored, try giving him/her some practice problems that they may have been going over in their math class. If they get them incorrect, you know what they need to focus on. • It can be helpful to tutor more than one student at once. If you notice that a couple of students are struggling with the same type of problem or question, help both of them. It can be more helpful, and maybe even more fun, for them to be able to help each other work out a problem. • Be patient.
