Zunh Doz/Sermon The Prudent andThe Simple Proverb 22:3; Psalms 53:1 Yauzsing Zeuz
The Prudent andSimple Introduction: Proverbs 22:3 says, “The prudent (wise) sees eviland hides himself (steps out of the way); but the naïve (simple, inexperienced, headstrong, giddy, and foolish) go on, and are punished for it”. We see this illustrated in various biblical characters (Joseph, Jethro, Abigail, Nehemiah…)as well as many from today’s example. There are many situations in life that, because of our own foolishness, we are punished.
The Prudent and Simple A. The prudent and simple man defined (Prov. 14:8,15;16:21;18:15) 1. The prudent, or wise, fear the Lord (Prov. 1:7), understands his way (Prov. 14:8), is cautious, and turns away from evil (Prov. 14:15; 3:7). 2. The prudent (wise) sees evil and hides himself… (Prov. 22:3). 3. The simple, or foolish, is one who is open to influence, is easily influenced, and one who mocks at sin (Prov. 14:10). He despises wisdom, is deceitful (Prov. 1:7;14:8), arrogant, and careless (Prov. 14:15). 4.The naïve (simple or foolish) sees evil (danger) yet goes on, and is punished for it. The simple heed not God’s instruction.
The Prudent and Simple B. The prudent and simple man contrasted (Prov. 12:23;14:15; 15:5) 1. In light of attitude, a wise man is cautious and turns away from evil; but a fool is arrogant and careless (Prov. 14:15). 2. In light of what people say, the naïve (simple) believes everything; but the sensible man (prudent) considers his steps (Prov. 14:15). 3. In light of knowledge, “A prudent man conceals knowledge; but the heart of fools proclaim folly” (Pro. 12:23). 4. In light of being ready for Christ’s return, the five foolish virgins took their lamps but no oil, versus the prudent who took oil with their lamps (Matt. 25:3-4).
The Prudent and Simple C. The prudent and simple man’s consequences (Prov. 22:3; 27:12; Gal. 6:8) 1. “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life” (Gal. 6:7-8). 2. A prudent man sees evil and hides himself. The naive proceed and pay the penalty (Prov. 27:12). 3. What the wicked fears will come upon him, but the desire of the righteous will be granted (Prov. 10:24). 4. The life of the simple or foolish is one of ruin, shame and grief…it is a life that is shortened (Prov. 10:27).
The Prudent and Simple D. The prudent and simple man confirmed (Prov. 10:23,12:16;13:16; 14:8;19:3; Psalms 14:1;53:1; Eccl. 10:12) 1. Confirmed through their action: “Doing wickedness is like ‘sports’ to a fool” (Prov. 10:23); “Fools mock at sin” (Prov. 14:9). 2. Confirmed through their reaction: “Every prudent man acts with knowledge, but a fool displays folly” (Prov. 13:16). 3. Confirmed through their belief: “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God’”(Ps. 14:1;53:1). 4. Confirmed through their word: “Words from the mouth of a wise man are gracious, while the lips of a fool consume him” (Eccl. 10:12).
Application of Principle to Practice: 1. The prudent, or wise, person believes God’s word, follows God’s word, and is cautious in his ways. The simple or foolish is easily influenced, believes every thing that is said, every story that is told, and every promise that is made. 2. Both the prudent and simple will reap what they sow. Their choices, actions, and beliefs will result in consequences or rewards. 3. The prudent and simple are known by their actions, reactions, beliefs, words, and values. 4. Do you believe God and follow His word? You are a prudent person. But “The fool says in his heart, ‘there is no God’.”(Ps. 14:1;53:1)
