  1. MathGrade 4 Mrs. Ennis Simple Division Lesson Thirteen

  2. 453 + 8971 + 36 = (3 x 3) + 8 = 57,048 – 49,892 = 324 ÷ 3 = 6 x ? = 18 How many faces on a cube? 6 quarts = _______gallons

  3. What is the value of the 3 in 435,089? Brad likes to climb trees. On Monday he climbed 6 more trees than on Tuesday. On Tuesday he climbed 5 trees. On Wednesday he climbed 7 fewer trees than on Monday. How many trees did he climb on Wednesday?

  4. 10. The oil drillers drilled 18 meters in the first well but did not find oil. They drilled 6 more meters and found oil. To reach oil in the second well they had to drill twice as deep. How far did they drill the second well?

  5. Simple Division

  6. Vocabulary • dividend - the number you are dividing • divisor- the number you are dividing by • quotient - the evenly divided result • remainder - what is left over that cannot be evenly divided • divisable- can be divided by evenly

  7. 136 is the dividend 27 is the quotient 5 is the divisor 1 is the remainder When we write the problem like this:136 ÷5 = 27 r 1

  8. 1 is the remainder r 1 27 5, the divisor, moves to here 27, the quotient, stays here 5 136 136, the dividend, moves here When writing it like this:

  9. Multiplication and Division are opposites: See the Family of Facts: 4 x 3 = 12 3 x 4 = 12 12 ÷ 4 = 3 12 ÷ 3 = 4

  10. Fact Family for 8, 2,16: 2 x 8 = 16 8 x 2 = 16 16 ÷ 2 = 8 16 ÷ 8 = 2

  11. Fact Family for 5, 4, 20: 4 x 5 = 20 5 x 4 = 20 20 ÷ 4 = 5 20 ÷ 5 = 4

  12. Fact Family for 6, 4, 24: 4 x 6 = 24 6 x 4 = 24 24 ÷ 4 = 6 24 ÷ 6 = 4

  13. Multiplication means groups of Division means share into groups 3 x 2 means 3 groups of 2 6 ÷ 3 means 6 shared into 3 groups

  14. Division means share into groups 12 ÷ 3 means 12 shared into 3 groups

  15. Division means share into groups 12 ÷ 3 means 12 shared into 3 groups 12 ÷ 3 = 4

  16. 16 ÷ 4 means 16 shared into 4 groups

  17. 16 ÷ 4 = 4 16 ÷ 4 means 16 shared into 4 groups

  18. Jim, Joe and Mark are sharing a pizza that is cut into 9 slices. How many slices will each person get if they split it evenly? 9 ÷ 3 = Mark Joe Jim

  19. Jim, Joe and Mark are sharing a pizza that is cut into 9 slices. How many slices will each person get if they split it evenly? 9 ÷ 3 = 3 Mark Joe Jim

  20. Kasi and Kim earned $16 cutting the grass for their father? If they divided the money equally, how much did each girl earn? 16 ÷ 2 = Kasi Kim

  21. Kasi and Kim earned $16 cutting the grass for their father? If they divided the money equally, how much did each girl earn? 16 ÷ 2 = 8 Kasi Kim

  22. What about REMAINDERS! • Remainders occur when a number cannot be divided equally into groups and the will be items left over. 2 r 3 5 13 Sometimes you can use mental math. It pays to memorize your multiplication facts!

  23. What about REMAINDERS! • You can also use long division, but this takes longer. 6 r 3 4 27 -24 3

  24. What about REMAINDERS! • Let’s try another. 8 r 3 5 43 -40 3

  25. What about REMAINDERS! • Let’s try another. 8 r 4 7 60 -56 4

  26. Kasi and Kim earned $18 cutting the grass for their father? If they divided the money equally, how much did each girl earn? 17 ÷ 2 = Kasi Kim

  27. Kasi and Kim earned $17 cutting the grass for their father? If they divided the money equally, how much did each girl earn? 17 ÷ 2 = 8 r 1 Kasi Kim

  28. Jim, Joe and Mark are sharing a pizza that is cut into 11 slices. How many slices will each person get if they split it evenly? 11 ÷ 3 = Mark Joe Jim

  29. Jim, Joe and Mark are sharing a pizza that is cut into 11 slices. How many slices will each person get if they split it evenly? 11 ÷ 3 = 3 r2 Mark Joe Jim
