  1. MATH and KITESGrade 4 BY AMANDA SINGLETON

  2. FIRST: WHAT IS A KITE? • DEFINITION • a light frame covered with some thin material, to be flown in the wind at the end of a long string. • MATHEMATICAL DEFINITION • a kite is a quadrilateral with an axis of symmetry • Quadrilateral • Any four-sided shape is a Quadrilateral. • the sides have to be straight, and it has to be 2-dimensional. • Axis of symmetry • line that divides the figure into two symmetrical (equal) parts in such a way that the figure on one side is the mirror image of the figure on the other side.

  3. HOW DOES MATH AFFECT KITES? • TO FIND THE • Perimeter • Area • 90° angles • Diagonals WE NEED MATH!! …LET’S DEFINE AND REVIEW THESE TOPICS

  4. MATH TOPICS: perimeter, area, 90 °angles, and diagonals • PERIMETER • Add up all of the lengths of the sides

  5. MATH TOPICS CONTINUED • AREA • Multiply the lengths of the two diagonal and divide by 2 • OR multiple the lengths of the two diagonals and multiply by 1/2

  6. MATH TOPICS CONTINUED • 90° ANGLES AND DIAGONALS • DIAGONALS • Two lines that bisect and go from one side of the quadrilateral to the opposite side of the quadrilateral • Bisect • longer diagonal cuts the shorter one in half. • 90° ANGLES • The intersection of the diagonals of a kite form 90° angles.

  7. LET’S PRACTICE! • FIND THE PERIMETER IF • A = 3 • B = 7

  8. THE CORRECT ANSWER IS… • 20 • HERE IS WHY: • 2A +2B • (2 x 3) + (2 x 7) • 6 + 14 • 20

  9. NOW LET’S TRY AREA! • WHAT IS THE AREA IF • A = 10 • B = 6

  10. THE CORRECT ANSWER IS… • 30 • HERE IS WHY • ½AB • ½(10)(6) • ½(60) • 60 × ½ (same as 60 ÷ 2) • 30

  11. DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE THE DIAGONALS AND 90° ANGLES ARE?

  12. THE CORRECT ANSWER IS…

  13. NOW LET’S MAKE OUR OWN KITES! • STEPS • Use the rulers to measure all 4 sides of your kite onto the construction paper *REMEMBER: the 2 shorter sides are equal and the 2 longer sides are equal • Draw the diagonals and 90° angles • Draw 4 things that make you happy *Put one in each area of your kite • Attach the string by taping it to the back of your kite *You may also use the other string/ribbon to tie onto “the tail” of your kite

  14. MATERIALS FOR OUR KITES • Construction paper • Scissors • Tape • Markers/colored pencils/crayons • Ruler • String/yarn/ribbon
