Academic Counseling We provide the following services: • Assistance to students in the selection of appropriate courses for each school year. • Meeting with parents, students and teachers when appropriate to discuss academic issues. • Referrals to educational therapists, tutors, and outside testing agencies when necessary. • Scheduling conferences with students who are in academic jeopardy.
Academic Counseling We provide information about: • Courses and graduation requirements for Mercy High School. • PSAT, SAT and SAT Subject, ACT tests. • Summer school and accelerated or special talent programs for students. • Appropriate study strategies and techniques. • College search and application process.
Course Selection – Dates • Student Curriculum Presentation: Jan 15 • AP Curriculum Presentation Evening: Jan 17 • AP Applications Available Online: Jan 18 • Online Scheduling Opens: Jan 22 • AP Applications Due: Feb 1 • Online Scheduling Closes: Feb 4 • Students Notified of AP Status: Feb 8 • Deadline for Course Change Request: Mar 1
Course Selection – Dates Counselors will meet with all students….Feb 5 – Mar 1 to discuss course selections and register for 2013-2014 classes
Course Requirements • English: 4 years • Religious Studies: 4 years • Mathematics: 3 years • Social Studies: 3.5 years • Fine Arts: 1 year • World Language: 2 years • Physical Education: .5 years • Science: 3 years
Honors and AP Courses Honors classes are just an advanced version of the regular classes. They are not as hard or time- consuming as AP classes … … but they still are hard.
Honors Points • An extra honor point is added to GPA for the following upper division courses for UCs and CSUs: • AP courses • English 4 Honors • Pre-Calculus Honors • Physics Honors • Anatomy & Physiology Honors • Honors third-year languages
Mercy Honors Courses • Mercy awards an extra point for all honors courses listed in the course catalog • Every department offers honors courses and awards the extra point starting in freshmen year. • Some colleges may accept these honors points – UC and CSU do not accept. Counselors will help calculate UC GPAs
Advancement Placement (AP) • Partnership between high schools and colleges • Students may earn college credit • Course guidelines developed by the College Board • 90% of the nation's colleges grant credit • Prerequisites are listed in Mercy Course catalog • Teachers and counselors are available to help with the decision-making process

Lastly…Most Important…Balance Some things to consider for scheduling… • Does your daughter REALLY love the subject? • Is she also involved in extra-curriculars or sports? • Is she taking the course just for the honors point? • Does she think she won’t get into college without an AP? … or many APs? • Does she fully understand the workload? • Has she asked about the course?
