  1. Group Project Reports • Over the course of the semester, groups made up of 4-6 students each will research and write a professional-quality report that analyzes current demographic and economic trends and forecasts future conditions for Bay County. • By the end of the semester each team will have developed: 1) a population forecast for Bay County that reflects recent trends as well as emerging trends in the county, and 2) an economic base analysisand forecast that also reflects recent trends as well as emerging trends in the county. • The objectives of this exercise are to: 1. Use basic techniques for the analysis of demographic and economic data and synthesize findings to draw strategic conclusions.2. Demonstrate ability to synthesize the results of data analysis and present those results to a non-technical audience using appropriate written, visual, and graphic displays.3. Engage in the execution of professional tasks in a group environment and manage the dynamic elements of group process.

  2. Methods To Be Used • The Population analysis will utilize the following methods: • Extrapolation technique(curve fitting) • Ratio extrapolation technique • Cohort-component technique • The Economic analysis will utilize the following methods: • 1) Economic Base Analysis a) Assumption technique b) Location Quotient technique c) Minimum Requirements technique • 2) Economic Projections a) Constant Share technique b) Shift Share technique • In addition, groups will be expected to familiarize themselves with the region and Bay County through the following methods: • 1) Interviews with Local Experts 3) Reviewing Government Docs • 2) Reviewing Popular Media 4) Reviewing Industry Reports

  3. Project Deliverables 1) A draft version of the population section of the report will be due at the midterm. This draft will constitute 10% of your course grade. (Due March 5th by 5:00pm) 2) A draft version of the economic analysis section (optional) will be due in the latter half of the course. (Due April 16th by 5:00pm) 3) The Final Report, consisting of both the population element and an economic element, will constitute 40% of your grade.(Due April 28th by 5:00pm) These deliverables will each be expected to be of the highest professional quality, with attention specifically paid to: 1) the presentation of the data via appropriate means (charts, tables, maps) and 2) the delineation of a “scenario” that fits well with past trends and emerging issues in the community.

  4. The Ideal Group Project Team • For this course project, the ideal group will have the following attributes in the whole of its membership: • Computer/Technical Skills • 2-3 “Spreadsheet Wizards” 2-3 “Data Analysts” • 2-3 “WWW Power-Users” 1-2 “Presentation Perfectionists” • 1-2 “GIS Experts” 2-3 “Copy Editors” • Group Skills • 1 “Group Leader” 1-2 “Group Recorders” • 1-2 “Group Organizers/Managers” 5 “Team Players” • Planning Skills • 1-2 “Political Analysts” 1-2 “Economic Analysts” • 1-2 “Futurists” 1-2 “People Persons” • 1-2 “Comprehensive Planners”

  5. Tips for Working in Groups • There is often great consternation experienced by students when they work in groups. However, group work is the foundation for much of what is “planning”… so now is the time to develop your group skills. • Group work proceeds best when the following conditions exist: • 1) There is a clear understanding as to the purpose of the group and the tasks the group is to accomplish. • 2) There is a clear delineation of responsibilities in the group and individual members understand their role(s) and the demands and expectations of those roles. • 3) There is a clearly established means for decision making in the group, either through group consensus or through a leader or leadership team. • 4) Regular group meetings take place, progress on tasks is made between these meetings, and updates are presented at these meetings. • 5) There is open communication between all members of the group; issues are aired and addressed as they arise. • 6) There is a shared commitment to the group and a shared responsibility of the product. • 7) C’s and P’s are in abundance: Courtesy, Communication, Commitment, Consensus, Purpose, Punctuality, Progress, Perseverance
