TYPES OF HANDICAPPED INMATES Those with limb impediments Broken limbs and casts Amputees with artificial limbs Those requiring the use of canes, crutches, and/or wheelchairs
SPECIAL PROBLEMS & RECOMMENDED RESPONSES Emotionally & mentally challenged • Need for special schooling** • Communication problems (patience)** • Classification & housing problems (protective custody)** • Need for extra protection**
SPECIAL PROBLEMS & RECOMMENDED RESPONSES • Hearing & vocally challenged • Communication problems (patience)** • Need for an interpreter and a TTY machine (telephone use) • Classification & housing problems (protective custody)** • Need for extra protection**
SPECIAL PROBLEMS & RECOMMENDED RESPONSES Heart attack & Stroke victims • Need for extra medical attention** • Correctional employees will have to monitor this inmate’s physical activity • The employee must be aware that this inmate will require extra medical attention
SPECIAL PROBLEMS & RECOMMENDED RESPONSES • i. Ensure that the inmate receives and takes all medication • ii. Increased visits to the medical unit Staff must be trained and certified in CPR & first aid Need for extra protection
SPECIAL PROBLEMS & RECOMMENDED RESPONSES Close observation by staff to note any changes in the inmate’s physical symptoms Classification & housing problems (protective custody)**
SPECIAL PROBLEMS & RECOMMENDED RESPONSES Inmates with limb impediments • Staff must be aware of the special security needs when interacting with inmates that have casts &/or wheel chairs. You must ensure that there is no contraband concealed there.
SPECIAL PROBLEMS & RECOMMENDED RESPONSES Inmates with limb impediments • Classification and housing problems (cells with wider doors, toilets with hand rails, wheel chair ramps)
SPECIAL PROBLEMS & RECOMMENDED RESPONSES • Have special bathing needs • Special chairs for shower use • Need for extra protection** • The classification staff should ensure that any job assignment given to these inmates should be matched with their capabilities **
Actions to be taken by Correctional Employees when Interacting with the Handicapped Be patient do not pity the handicapped Treat the handicapped as individuals Be aware of the special problems of the handicapped Help them help themselves Provide extra protection
