  5. Online records To focus our efforts, we’re working to improve culture in three areas: Information governance Benchmarking

  7. Our Approach People exist as they are Potentially confused, fearful We work to increase: (3) Awareness (4) Understanding (5) Motivation (6) Action (7) Commitment

  8. Online record access: Jan 2013 survey • 318 people took part: 137 using paper survey forms and 181 online. said, they would look at their health and care records if they were available online.

  9. Benefits • Feel more involved in care • Feel more in control • More aware of individual health issues • Able to make better decisions about care • Probably talk more about health • Would trust health professionals more

  10. Biggest worries • Security • Confidentiality However, said, it would be acceptable to have their records online as long as there were secure systems and passwords in place, perhaps similar to online banking.

  11. Most commonly identified solutions • Privacy: Reassurance • Utility: No TLAs or jargon. Medical terms explained • Support: an accessible telephone helpline • Encouragement: from doctors and nurses

  12. Online record access: March 2013 focus groups • Four 1.5 hour focus groups • The final sample included: • 16 participants living with HIV/AIDS (mix of ages approx. 25 – 55) • 30 participants from Age UK London (50+)

  13. Summary of findings • Many Age UK London participants enjoyed using computers and were very competent • The level of security perceived to be appropriate by participants is inversely proportional to their level of comfort with computers • Potential issues: increasing discrimination and inequalities - computer access or more vulnerable groups

  14. Next steps: online records access • Further focus groups and surveys: patients with diabetes • Partnering with organisations across London to raise awareness • Citizen events and roadshows
