2013-2014 Science/Social Studies Kick-Off Meeting • Do you have: • OPSB Comprehensive Curriculum Alignment (June 2011) • Science/Social Studies Assessment Guidance 2013-14
WHAT are we doing? • Comprehensive curriculum/GLE’s for Science and Social Studies • NOTE: Full implementation of CCSS for ELA and Math • Louisiana’s hybrid version of PARCC assessment for standardized testing • SLT’s for all subjects (that can be used to “pull up” your student performance score for VAM) • Edlinefor communication with parents about classroom assignments, tests, etc. • 6th AND 7TH - Paper/pencil benchmark tests from OPSB (not Eagle) • 8TH – Eagle benchmark test
HOW to Use Backward Design in Instructional Planning • Step 1: Identify target standards (GLE’s). • OPSB Comprehensive Curriculum Alignment (GLE’s) • Found in the LDOE Toolbox • K-12 Science – GLE’s, assessment structure, key concepts, sample items • K-12 Social Studies - GLE’s, assessment structure, key concepts, sample items • Additional Literacy Standards Availableat corestandards.org • RH – Reading History/Social Studies • RST– Reading Science and Technical Subjects
HOW to Use Backward Design in Instructional Planning • Step 2. Determine acceptable levels of evidence that support mastery of standards. • LDOE End-of-Year Assessment Guidance(scroll below ELA and Math) • Assessment structure – MC and rubric • Key Concepts • Sample Items
HOW to Use Backward Design in Instructional Planning • Step 3. Design activities that will make desired results happen. • Referenced in OPSB Curriculum Alignment (Scope and Sequence) • Develop units of instruction that will build knowledge and focus on academic language and skills (not just content). • Create lesson plans with daily activities that use formative assessments to track progress.
Using Rubrics and Peer Assessment for Formative Assessment • Rubrics model expectations that will used to grade constructed response questions on standardized tests • Peer assessment give students more ownership and involvement in learning • If designed correctly, peer assessment makes life better for teachers!!!
WHERE can I find more resources? • All OJHS Teachers • http://ojhsteachers.wikispaces.com/ • Science • Inquiry-based Learning Model for Science • Middle School Science Experiments • Social Studies • Google News Advanced Search • Maps 101 • Science and Social Studies • Literacy Design Collaborative
WHEN do I need to start? • Researching, planning and developing year-long plans, units, etc. - NOW! • Determining where my students are academically – when benchmark tests are available and you are ready. • Creating assessments that are modeled after the new standardized tests – between Christmas and the scheduled testing dates.
Academic Language • How many ways can you word a prompt? • Justify > Explain > Defend… • What are the different meanings for prompts between subjects? • Science – Justify your hypothesis… • Social Studies – Justify your position on this argument… • ELA - Justify your response with evidence from text… • Math – Justify your work for this problem… • OJHS Academic Language Project
Academic Shifts for Literacy in ALL Subjects • Complexity: Regular practice with complex text and its academic language. • Evidence: Reading and writing grounded in evidencefrom text, literary and informational. • Knowledge: Building knowledge through content rich nonfiction. Shifts in ELA/Literacy CCSS • Balancing informational & literary text • Knowledge of disciplines • Staircase of complexity • Text-based answers • Writing from sources • Academic Vocabulary
WHY does this matter? • We must give our students all the tools they need to show that they can do this work. • If the students succeed, we succeed…
Science and Social Studies ….we are at the tip of the iceberg
