Height of Church Power • By the late 12th century, the pope’s had reached the height of their power • “…between God and man, lowerthan God but higher than man.” • Pope Innocent puts King John of England and his kingdom under interdict for appointing an archbishop without the pope’s approval • In 1209 Innocent launches a crusade against a group in southern France who wanted to purify the Church and return to simpler ways of Christianity

  3. The World in 1050 Medieval Europe leaves a period of isolation Muslim world had expanded civilizations, trading, and economy during the early Middle Ages

  4. Crusades Begin • Byzantine Emperor asks Pope Urban II for help fighting the Turks • Motives • Religious zeal: Fiery speeches motivate crusaders – armies of knights, but also ordinary men and women • The Pope: Urban wants to increase his power and heal the schism between the Roman and Byzantine churches • He also wants Christian knights fighting Muslims instead of one another

  5. Victories & Defeats • Only the First Crusade nears achieving its goals • Christian knights captured Jerusalem in 1099 • They commence to massacre Jews and Muslims in the city • The Crusades continue sporadically for the next 200 years • Europeans will mount crusades against other Muslim lands (i.e. North Africa)
