Evaluating the Situation • Before administering First Aid… • Use your senses… • Look, Listen, and Smell • Look for the cause of the emergency – is the situation still dangerous • Look for a way to call for help • Listen for dangerous situations… gas leaks, motor vehicles, engines running • Smells of hazardous materials
Major EmergenciesWhen to Call 911 • Any life threatening situation • Person Is not breathing • Person is bleeding • Person is unconscious • If the person is light headed and thinks they may lose consciousness • Major chest pains and/or stomach pains

Helping Emergency Personnel • If emergency personnel is rendering First Aid and asks for your help - listen, and do what is asked • If you aren’t needed - stay out of the way • Keep others away - keep area clear • Help direct emergency personnel • Respect the privacy of others
First Aid For OthersEmployee Assisted First Aid • Any time there is a non threatening injury • Minor cuts and bruises • Minor headaches • Irregular behavior in your coworker • Locate First Aid supplies and administer help • Calm injured person
Signs of Emergency SituationsSeek Immediate Help If YOU • Become dizzy or light headed • Are chilled and sweating • Have shortness of breath • Have pain in center of chest spreading to neck, shoulder, or arms • Have sudden weakness/numbness of the face • Have loss of speech / trouble talking or understanding speech • Have a sudden severe headache • Are having diabetic issues • Are having allergic reactions to… bug bits or food
Self PreparednessTime is critical - do what you can before the unexpected happens • Complete a Med card so emergency personnel know your condition ahead of time and can prepare (Get a Med card) • Medications - keep a list in your pocket, wallet, or purse • Let other know any special needs for your condition • Annual update your emergency contact info in Human Resources
First Aid Training The City encourages employee to enroll in First Aid training by offer ongoing First Aid Classes. Each department is required to have employee trained in First Aid Finance Department Compliance Requirements is: 100% field 50% office Lasts for 2-3 year
