What is a student technology assistant team? • A student technology assistant team is a group of selected students with an interest in computers. • They can be used in many different ways depending on the age of the students. • Elementary school students can • help teachers troubleshoot • conduct routine maintenance on the computers • distribute the computer cart • Middle and High school students can • Assist teachers • upgrade software • learn new advances in technology • model safe computer behavior
Problems with Laptops on the Cart and Classroom Computers at Bowen • Cleaning • Fingerprints are not routinely cleaned off the screens. • The keyboards are not wiped down to get rid of dirt and germs. • Maintenance • The desktops are littered with student documents not placed in the correct folders, open programs, or open documents • Defect collection and notification • The sticky notes are being left on the laptops by teachers to alert the technology specialist to a problem and either fall off or are not routinely collected.
Problems with the Computer Carts at Bowen • Power source • The laptops are not charged because the cart was not plugged in overnight or in between uses. • Some of the laptops are not charged because they were not plugged into the cord. • Missing laptops • Some of the laptops on the cart are missing and you do not have enough for your class. • Cord maintenance • The cords fall out, get tangled or go missing. This may contribute to the power source problem.

How can the Student Technology Assistant Team be Teacher Helpers? • Classroom Assistant • A second set of hands (especially in the younger grades) to troubleshoot and help students navigate • Distribution and retrieval of computer cart • Either to go get the cart or return the cart when you are unable to leave your room • Troubleshoot network issues • With the new laptops there have been many issues around connecting to the network. It requires retyping in the password or even restarting the computer (several times) which can take a huge chunk of time if it happens to more than one laptop. • Model safe computer use • Be role models for students in their class • Be teachers for students in the younger grades

Responsibilities of STAT at Bowen • Laptops on the Cart and Classroom Computers • Cleaning screen with antibacterial wipes • Cleaning keyboard antibacterial wipes and dust can • Clean the desktops by placing items in proper folders and closing out programs • Collect sticky notes left by teachers and create a task list for the technology specialist • Computer Carts • Untangle cords • Rewrap cords • Make sure all laptops are plugged into proper computers • Make sure cart is plugged into a power source • Create list of missing laptops for technology specialist • Teacher Helpers (based on availability during the day) • Model safe computer use for students • Make sure all computers are connected to the network prior to use by class • Distribute and retrieve computer cart for teachers who are unable to leave their rooms • Assist teachers during classroom use of laptops by helping students navigate to websites or through a program
Responsibilities of the supervisor for STAT at Bowen • Have the necessary skills to do all of the tasks being asked by the students • Available every day after school for half and hour • Teach students how to maintain computer carts • Show students how to troubleshoot network issues • Maintain discipline within the group of students • Work closely with the technology specialist to deal with identified problems • Create weekly schedule for team • Deal with any problems that may arise
