State Standards • Common Core (Language Arts and Math) • North Carolina Essential Standards (Science, Social Studies, Creative Core)
Shared Reading: Shared Reading is an interactive reading experience that occurs when students join in or share the reading of a book or other text while guided and supported by a teacher. The teacher explicitly models the skills of proficient readers, including reading with fluency and expression.
Literacy Centers/Rotations • 1. Read to self/Partner reading2. Technology/Listen to reading3. Teacher Table/Strategy Lesson4. Word Work (Phonics/Vocabulary/Spelling) • When students read and write independently during read to self/partner reading, it allows the teachers the opportunity to work with small groups of students to teach and reinforce essential reading skills.
Writing Units • Labels, Captions, Sentences, Class Story • Poetry, Thank-you Notes, Descriptions • Letters, Reports • Friendly Letters, Personal Narratives • Summaries, Stories • Opinion Sentences, Opinion Paragraphs

Math Curriculum-Common Core • Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA.1) • Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. • Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction. • Add and subtract within 20. • Work with addition and subtraction equations. • Number and Operations in Base Ten (NBT.1) • Extend the counting sequence. • Understand place value. • Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. • Measurement and Data (MD.1) • Measure lengths indirectly and by iterating length units. • Tell and write time. • Represent and interpret data. • Geometry (G.1) • Reason with shapes and their attributes.

Grading/Report Cards • Report Cards are issued at the end of each quarter • We use a 1-2-3-4 scale as follows: • 4-consistently and independently demonstrates an advanced understanding • 3-consistently demonstrates understanding • 2-Is inconsistent in demonstrating understanding • 1-does not demonstrate understanding • Grades are calculated through a variety of means: tests, observations, projects etc. • Creative Core teachers use O-S-N-U grades • Progress reports are issued ½ way through each quarter
Home Review 1. Reading Student should read for at least 20 minutes each night – please sign the reading log in your child’s blue folder 2. Math Work Math pages will come home on an as needed basis so that parents can keep up with what we’re learning in class. 3. Project Based Learning Projects will be assigned that correlate with the standards that we are learning in Social Studies periodically throughout the year.
Community Service Bright Blessings Bright Blessings is a 501c3 non-profit organization serving homeless families across the greater Charlotte region. The two core programs, Bless-A-Birthday and Bless-A-Baby, bring joy, care, comfort and hope to more than 3,000 local homeless children every year. It takes the helping hands and generous hearts of community friends to make this happen. Together we are impacting the lives of struggling children who deserve to be celebrated and cared for.

Technology • Portaportal-a website where we have gathered numerous links to educational sites appropriate for first grade. Links are organized by category. Guest access is: ua111 (www.portaportal.com) • Scholastic News-Website and print material that incorporates science and social studies topics. • Spelling City- a website where weekly spelling lists are posted and students can play games, take tests, and review for tests. It’s on the Portaportal website under Spelling. See page at back of packet for more information.
