Classroom Management Our Class Rules: • Arrive on time, ready to learn. • Show respect to others and yourself. • Show respect for your environment. • Practice safety. • Follow directions.
GradingGrades are based on the following: • Assignments/Tests/Projects • Work Habits • Group projects • Staying on task • Each morning, I check that the students have completed the assignments from the night before. If they have, they earn a sticker on their chart. 25 stickers earns 2 free HW passes or 20 IC Bucks!! • If a student forgets to complete an assignment, I will have him or her stay in at recess to complete it. As soon as the work is done, they may go out and play! Mrs. Hill and I rotate who has recess and who is hosting the workroom each recess. • So that they can learn responsibility through natural consequences, we do not allow them to call home for forgotten items including homework, lunches, instruments, or sneakers for PE. We also request that if you discover needed items that have been left behind, PLEASE don’t deliver it to school. I PROMISE, they will be less likely to do it again in the future if they know they will not be bailed out by an adult!
A+ = 100% A = 93-99% A- = 90-92% B+ = 88-89% B = 83-87% B- = 80-82% C+ = 78-79% C = 73-77% C- = 70-72% D+ = 68-69% D = 63-67% D- = 60-62% F = <60% Grading ScaleThe grades students earn in 5th grade are: In addition…
In cooperation with the Shawnee Mission District homework policy, each student will have 50 minutes of study time each night. Study time includes daily work, studying for tests, correcting previous assignments (more on that in a minute!), and working on projects, as well as free reading. Students should complete their assigned schoolwork first, then fill whatever time is left with free reading. PLEASE let me know if your child is taking considerably longer to complete their work at home! I generally give time in class to begin the assignments, working a few of the problems with the whole class, so there may be times when your student has finished an assignment during the school day. HOWEVER, they should still be bringing it home to show you, even if it is done. Feel free to ask them how they found answers to check for understanding. Homework assignments back up the skills or strategies learned in the classroom. Homework assignments are most successful when a parent or adult is available to answer questions and give guidance. Please initial your child’s homework planner each night. The goal is to make students responsible learners! Homework Policy
Correcting Work In 5th grade, your child can raise his/her homework score AS WE GRADE by fixing mistakes on homework. If they get a C+ or lower on any assignment, students are required to rework the problems or questions missed. Otherwise, correcting is their (or your ) choice! When the students turn work in, I go over it and give half points back for any corrections made. The kids can also fix it once I return the assignment to them. Because we offer this, I don’t do much “extra credit”.
How It Works Say your child earned a 60%. That’s a D-! Ouch! They missed 40% (100%-60% = 40%). However, if they correct each problem missed AND show work, I will give back half of what was originally missed by adding it on to the original score. (original 60% + 20% back = 80%). The only score that gets recorded in my gradebook would be a B-!!! The reason I offer this is to give kids the opportunity to reflect on what they missed, and work the problems in the correct manner, hopefully preparing them to use those skills correctly as we progress.
Book Reports • The students will complete at least 2 book reports a month. This is fewer books than your student was asked to read in 4th grade because of the increasing complexity of the books. • Book reports will be in the form of Accelerated Reader tests or projects assigned. Students will need to spend an average of 20 minutes each weeknight reading or preparing their book projects. Most projects take between 1-3 hours to prepare. Encourage your student not to wait until the end of the month to get started! • Usually, we will specify the type of book to be read for the project; students may choose what to read for the A.R. test as long as it is an appropriate level for them. • Book reports will always be due on the last school day of the month. • We will begin the first series of book reports and tests in September.
Jayhawk Reading Program • If students are interested in competing for the Jayhawk reading award, they need to complete at least 18 A.R. tests and 5 William Allen White book reports to receive a gold certificate, or 15 A.R. tests and 4 William Allen White book reports to receive a silver certificate. The reader with the most completed reports will be awarded the Jayhawk patch.
Field Trips • We will be taking several field trips this year—see the back table for sign-ups if you are interested in attending as a parent volunteer! • We do ask that a few basic guidelines be followed by anyone who is a chaperone. • Please don’t buy your child/child’s group items that aren’t being purchased for all of the 5th graders (gift shop items, pop, etc). • Please refrain from talking/texting on a cell phone. If you absolutely must, have another adult take over your responsibilities to the children. • Parents may drive themselves to and from events; however, all students must ride the bus. ALL drivers for the district have to have a background check done through the KBI before being allowed to drive students during the school day. • Please let our head room parent and Mrs. Jessee know if you can’t make a field trip for which you signed up AS SOON AS YOU CAN so we can get another parent to attend in your place.

Incentive Coupons (IC Bucks) IC Bucks are a form of “money” that the kids may earn for good behavior and good grades. Students may have to pay a classroom or specials teacher an IC Buck for poor choices made during the school day. At the end of the month, they have the opportunity to participate in an auction where they may bid on and purchase prizes. Not necessarily every child will purchase trinkets every month. The students can save their IC Bucks and use them during the next auction. If you would like to donate items for our auctions, please see the sign up lists on the round table!
More… HOME/SCHOOL COMMUNICATION • As I grade students’ work, I will return it to their Boomerang Folder. Remember to have them correct assignments with poor grades! They have been doing an AWESOME job of bringing those Boomerang Folders back! Thank you! • Monday Mail will also be placed in Boomerang Folders for your child to take home to you. Don’t forget to look for weekly newsletters to come by email starting next week! • Every Friday I will send home a Weekly Progress Report. Please go over it with your child, sign and return it with them on Monday. REACHING MRS. JESSEE • Please feel free to communicate any questions or concerns by sending a note with your child, leaving a voicemail message (993-5827), or emailing me (amandajessee@smsd.org). • I also have a class website at http://teacherweb.com/KS/WestwoodView/AmandaJessee/ This will have each day’s homework posted, as well as have access to websites that correlate with projects we will be doing in class. I would recommend having your student bookmark it as a favorite on your home computer.
ABSENT WORK POLICY Students will be given two days for every day gone to make up work after an absence. Work may be requested by calling the office on the morning of the absence. Work can be sent home with a sibling or be given to the student upon returning to school. If any prolonged illness or other special circumstances interfere with the child being able to make up the work within the time frame, I will always be flexible and willing to make special arrangements! Please contact me at the earliest convenience. BIRTHDAYS Birthdays are an exciting time. Feel free to send treats at the beginning of the day, or to drop them off later in the day! Children with summer birthdays can bring them on their half birthday or at the end of the school year. I would also like to mention that birthday invitations should be mailed from home and not sent to school so that we do not hurt any feelings. Odds and Ends…
FYI We will be ordering from the Scholastic Book orders this year. Book orders will be sent home with the kids about once a month. Please make 1check out to Scholastic Book Clubs, even if ordering from multiple clubs at once. We also have set up online ordering where you may pay Scholastic directly with your credit card. We do go out for recess all days that the weather permits. Please make sure that your child is dressed for the weather. Channel 41 has an automated weather line that your child can check—831-4141. Students may bring one healthy snack to school to eat during the school day including: fruits, vegetables, crackers, granola bars, cheese sticks, nuts, etc. I encourage students to bring a water bottle to school. However, I ask that they bring them home at least once a week to be washed!
Please Don’t Forget…. • Sign ups: • Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences • Parent volunteers (field trips, parties) • To donate class auction items! • Thank you for coming!!
