Section 2 Evaluating Resources – Criteria to Consider
Be skeptical… !!WARNING!! The internet provides access to such a huge volume of information, from so many different sources, that researchers must learn to critically evaluate what they find there. Because anyone can publish online, you must work hard to determine the validity, authorship, timeliness, and integrity of sources on the open web. Be sure to approach internet research with a healthy dose of skepticism, and always use critical thinking to question everything you find. …and of course, all of this holds true for all types of information regardless of its format. !! WARNING!!

Section 3 Finding Articles Online
Finding Articles • Start at the MSU Library’s Main Page: http://www2.lib.msu.edu • Click on E-Resources • From the E-Resources Page (http://er.lib.msu.edu), select Labor Relations and Human Resources in the drop down box labeled “Browse E-Resources by Subject” • There will be a number of resources listed on this page , we will concentrate on the indexes ABI-Inform and Factiva.
Step 3: Select Labor Relations & Human Resources from Subject List
What’s an index? An index is asubject guide for journals, magazines, & newspaper articles. It gives citations—author, journal title, date, volume, etc. —and, usually, the full-text (but sometimes only an abstract) of an article on a particular topic. Both Factiva & ABI/Inform are indexes which focus on business topics exclusively. ABI/Inform includes scholarly publications – Factiva does not.
A word about journals… • 3 types: Scholarly vs. popular vs. trade • Audience & purpose & content are different • Lose visual cues online, so can be harder to determine what is scholarly • For a good overview, see: http://www.library.nd.edu/howdoi/documents/pop_schol_trade.pdf
ABI/Inform: Basic Search Page TYPE KEYWORDS HERE Can limit search to full text documents and/or scholarly journals.
