  4. Purpose of BWEP • Purpose: • To increase the exposure of UQ law students to the Qld Bar; and • Provide UQ law students with an unparalleled legal work experience opportunity.

  5. About BWEP • 20-40 hours unpaid work experience • Undertaken casually over September to December • Eligibility: • Undergraduate students who are not in their first year, penultimate year or final year • Graduate entry students who are not in their first year

  6. Possible Tasks • Legal Research • Drafting pleadings, advices or schedules of damages • Prepare factual chronologies • Summarise cases, witness statements or evidence • Transcribe from dictations • Prepare PowerPoint slides • Reception duties (i.e. answer and direct telephone calls, diary management, sort mail) • Administrative duties (i.e. filing, photocopying, faxing, word processing and formatting, data entry) • Take notes at client meetings • Attend court appearances

  7. How to apply • Applications open 1 August and need to be emailed to bwep@uqls.com • Applications need to include: • Resume; • Cover letter; • Academic Transcript; and • Application form (available on the UQLS website) • APPLICATIONS ARE DUE FRIDAY 15 August 5pm

  8. Selection & Placement Process • The UQLS Careers Team manage this process • Keep in mind that this program was designed for • students in the earlier years of their degree who don’t yet have any work experience under their belt; and • UQ students who have an interest in advocacy, or who want to be a barrister, to get an insight into what the life of a barrister is like and see whether or not it is for them. • We will be selecting you on the basis of interest first, then on the basis of grades and extracurricular experience.

  9. Selection & Placement Process cont. • The barristers will be asked similar questions to you so that we can place you accordingly. • For example, tasks required, practice areas and work history. • Barristers may request to interview you prior to your placement being confirmed. • Students, and the barrister(s) with whom they are placed, will each be given information about each other

  10. Important Dates • Friday 1 August: applications open • See the UQLS website • Friday 15 August 5pm : applications close • Week 4/5 Semester 2: interviews
