Muscles of the Body • Every human has over600 muscles. • Muscles allow you to move your body in different ways bypulling on the bones to which they are attached. • THINK! – What tissue connects muscle to bone? • Tendon
Muscle Types • Skeletal • This muscle appears striated or striped under the microscope. • This muscle is voluntary, meaning you control when you want it to work. • They react quickly and tire quickly. • Smooth • This muscle appears smooth. It has NO striations. • These muscles are involuntary, meaning you do not control them. • These muscles work on their own to move food through the digestive system or to keep blood moving through the veins and arteries. • They react slowly and tire slowly. • Cardiac • This muscle is heart muscle. • It is similar to smooth muscle in that it is involuntary. • It is similar to skeletal muscle in that it has striations. • They never tire.
How Muscles Work • Muscles work in pairs. • One muscle in a pair is the flexor. This muscle contracts to bring a limb closer to the body. • The other muscle is the extensor. It allows the limb to extend. • When one muscle contracts the other relaxes. • Clip: Biceps & Triceps
Muscles Gone Wrong! • Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness • The “achy” feeling the day after you exercise • Scientists not sure exactly what causes it but there are a few ideas • Reduced blood flow to muscle during exercise • Exercise causes tiny tears in the muscle • Overstretching damages the tissue around muscle
Muscles Gone Wrong! • ALS (Amylotrophic lateral sclerosis) • Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease • A break down of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord • Over time, muscles weaken and paralysis sets in
Muscles Gone Wrong! • Parkinson’s Disease • Damage to a group of nerves in the brain that control body movements • Symptoms include • Tremors of hands • Stiffness of movements (trouble walking or talking) • Mask-like face
