Fiber Optic Deployments in Romania: Evolution and Future Development

This article provides a practical view of the evolution of fiber optic networks in Romania over the last 10 years. It explores the shift from backbone and FTTB networks to FTTH and indoor fiber optic infrastructure to support future services such as 5G and Smart Cities. The document also outlines research directions for the future development and use of existing or new networks.

  1. Fiber Optic Deployments in Romania between Metropolitan Fiber Optic Networks andIndoor Fiber Optic Infrastructure A practical view on where are going the Fiber Optic Deployments Cornel Barbut, AFOR, Vice-President 29th of June, 2018

  2. Fiber Optic Deployments in Romania • This article is a short description of Fiber Optic Networks evolution in Romania in the last 10 years. • Deployments were moved from backbone and FTTB networks to FTTH or indoor Fiber Optic networks as well in the cities as a support for future services like 5G or Smart Cities and multiple and alternative operators • This document presents some research directions for fiber optic networks experts in Romania to be explored for the future development and use of existing or new networks.

  3. Fiber Optic Deployments in Romania Introduction - Romania has a lot of fiber optic cables installed in the country with hundreds of ISPs along telecom operators running the fiber optic networks. • Presently there are 957 authorized suppliers of electronic communication services compared with 1452 in 2014 • 163 suppliers of FTTH systems • 4,5 millions of fix internet connections by FTTH – dec 2017 (ANCOM) • 5 millions of CATV connections (45% are digital) • >100 000 km of Fiber Optic Networks deployed (?)

  4. Fiber Optic Deployments in Romania Fiber Optic Deployment Status in Romania • One Fiber Optic Cable Plant in Romania since 2013 – Prysmian in Slatina • Fiber Optic Cables types installed in Romania: • Underground – Direct Burried + OPUG • Aerial >90% • ADSS • OPGW • Fig. 8 • ADL • Duct – classic + micro-cables (inside micro-ducts) • Owners of Fiber Optic Cable Networks are growing-up • Infrastructure Law no. 159/2016

  5. Fiber Optic Deployments in Romania Metropolitan Fiber Optic Networks

  6. Fiber Optic Deployments in Romania Metropolitan Fiber Optic Networks In Romania: • Bucharest: NETCITY, started in 2008, >900 km. Sold to Direct One in 2017 • Cluj: DUCT CITY, started in 2008, > 80 km. Sold to RCS &RDS • Oradea, Timisoara, Constanta, Sibiu, Tg. Mures, Arad … – RCS&RDS • Constanta, 2016 – TGT for a consortium of telcos • Brasov, >90% underground networks, 5 closed manholes for 7 operators • Otopeni, shared free infrastructure • …

  7. Fiber Optic Deployments in Romania Metropolitan Fiber Optic Networks • Research directions: • Which business model is to be recommended to the Municipalities (out of the 4 used till now in Romania)? • Can Fiber Optic Network accommodate other services than the classics for telecommunications (internet, TV and telephony)? • Streets cabinets are to be used? • Solutions for vilas areas to be explored • Used Fiber Optic Cables can be recycled? • The limits between wireline and wireless (IoT) to be analysed • …..

  8. Fiber Optic Deployments in Romania Indoor Fiber Optic Networks • Office Buildings • Shopping Malls • Residential campuses • Residential blocks (moving FTTB to FTTH) • Shared BEP – ITU-T L.82 • CPR is respected in Romania?

  9. Fiber Optic Deployments in Romania Indoor Fiber Optic Networks • Research directions: • How much deeper can go fiber optic into Customer Premises? In Germany they have projects FTTB (Fiber-to-the-Bed) in hospitals and in Spain FTTD (Fiber-to the-Desk) • Elaborating a Guide for Indoor Fiber Optic Networks with Best Practices and Lessons Learned from existing indoor fiber optic networks • Updating the Romanian standard for low currents I 18/1-2001 (very old) as fiber optic cables can be installed in the same cable channel as electric cables and other accessories too • Could be possible to use for Last Mile other types of fiber optic than SSM (Standard Single Mode) or Multimode? There are some studies for example which are trying to use POF (Plastic Optic fibers). • Can be used fiber optic for sensors in various applications?

  10. Fiber Optic Deployments in Romania Conclusions • There is a lot of fiber optic cable in Romania to be better used in the future • That’s time to start exploring the limits of Fiber Optic expanding: • Metropolitan Fiber Optic Networks (for cities) • Indoor Fiber Optic Networks (for citizens) • Other types of services to be deployed on fiber optic networks (like sensors and others)
