  8. Home Language Survey • Since Lau vs Nichols (1974) Schools have been required by federal law to determine the primary language spoken and understood by each student. • That process begins with a questionnaire for parents. PACE Setters

From the CDE Website • When a child is registered for school, a home language survey must be completed by the parents. • If this survey indicates that a language other than English is spoken at home, the district must test the student on the CELA Placement Test for Language Proficiency. PACE Setters

  10. Who needs an HLS? • All students who enroll in an APS school for the first timemust fill out a HLS. • “All” means all. Every student, both Native English speakers and those who speak another language need to fill out a HLS. • We have HLS forms available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese and it is currently being translated into other languages.   11. Which HLS do I use? -There is a new form for 2009-10. It has an additional question (#9) which ask for parents’ preferred language. -You will be able to use a query to identify languages in each classroom. -Please do NOT use old HLS. The new HLS for this year has a date at the bottom; ‘07/09 -Each school is responsible for making their own copies of the HLS. Triplicate forms are no longer available. -Only two copies are needed.   12. Clarifying with Parents • When you receive the HLS make sure you read it over completely. • If you have questions, interview the student and/or the family to avoid mis-identification. PACE Setters

  13. HLS-Tricky Questions for Parents • Student’s name: Ask parents to enter the name as it appears on the Birth Certificate • Country of birth: Many ELLs are in fact born in the USA (60%). PACE Setters

  14. HLS-Tricky Questions for Parents • What language(s) does your child read? write? Students who studied Spanish, French, or German in school might read and write it, but that is not the intention of this form. This question is to determine if ELLs have literacy in L1 (1st Language). PACE Setters

  15. HLS-Tricky Questions for Parents • Language(s) used for instruction in the other country: This refers to the language the teachers were speaking when they were teaching science, math, social studies… PACE Setters

  16. HLS-Tricky Questions for Parents • Has your child received instruction in your/their native language? This question should include both instruction in another country and instruction in the USA where there was a bilingual school and instruction in math, science, social studies, etc., might have been in Spanish or some other language.   17. Where does the HLS go? • The HLS for Native English speakers goes in a student’s CUM file • Two copies of HLS for ELLs: • One in CUM files • Original to Jhzaneqi (Bess) Dickens, ESC 2 Accountability and Research PACE Setters

  18. Student Files • We will no longer have ELA files. We take information from the ELA file and put it into the CUM file. • What goes in the CUM file for ELA? • HLS • Copy of NCLB letter • CELA placement (only until we receive CELA pro) • Placement profile sheet • CELA Pro Report PACE Setters

  19. HLSTransfer Students • If students leave the district and then return they do NOT need to fill out another HLS. • Students who transfer from one APS school to another DO NOT need to fill out a new HLS, including from elementary to middle, or middle to high school. PACE Setters

  20. Who gives CELA Placement? • ELA TLs • Trained (by ELA TL/Consultant): • Teachers • EA • Paras • Once we have used all of our CELA placement books, schools will have to make their own copies. PACE Setters

  21. When do we give CELA placement? • It is important to give the CELA placement as soon as possible. • We have up to 20 days to complete testing and send a copy of the HLS to Bess. PACE Setters

CELA Placement, 1st Grade • The NEW 1st grade CELA Place has the same number of questions as the Kinder Place, so we will rename the kinder profile sheet to say K-1st grade profile sheet. • If teachers were using the OLD 1st grade CELA Place, they would count all of the speaking and all of the listening. • They would NOT score questions 1-4 of the reading (analyze words & read words). But they WOULD score questions 5 & 6 on the reading (which are the same questions on the new version). • Then, teachers would NOT score any portion of the writing. • They would use the new K-1st profile sheet to identify a proficiency level.   23. How do we schedule students into ELD blocks? -Give the CELA placement ASAP -Determine which blocks are available and schedule accordingly PACE Setters

  24. What about the ELAchieve Express Placement? -The Express Placement is not the official assessment to identify language learners. -It does NOT take the place of the CELA Placement. PACE Setters

Who enters ELA information into IC? • Bess Dickens in the only person that enters ELA information from the HLS onto the ELA tab. • Bess is also the only person that can change information on the ELA tab. • ELA TAB in IC will identify the student’s current language proficiency level. (Not ICAM or district defined) PACE Setters

  26. Building Filters for Queries • To build a filter Click on the Access Tab in Infinite Campus • Open Ad Hoc Reporting • Click On: • -Filter Designer • -Create a New Filter • *Create New Filter Using Query Wizard • -Filter Data Type • *Student • -Next PACE Setters

  31. Filtering Data • Manipulate the “Operator” and “Value” to pull specific data. • If you’ve added fields to your Query and want them in a specific order you may change the sequence by using the “Seq” under “Data Export Options” PACE Setters
