  1. December 3, 2010 • Attendance • Go over tests! • Check Homework – 2.1 Stopwatch Math • Learning Targets: • Identify variables of speed, distance and time in the formula: v = d/t • Solve problems for each variable by using the correct formula

  2. Table of Contents Date Topic Page 11/8 Measurement 17 11/10 Linear Measurement 18 11/15 Mass Measurement 19 11/17 Volume Measurement 20 11/30 Measuring Time 21 12/2 Distance, Time, Speed 22 12/3 Relationships: Speed 23 Distance, and Time

  3. 23 Relationships: Speed, Distance, Time 12/3/10 Page 36 Summary:

  4. Think – Pair – Share There are many ways the idea of speed is communicated in the world. What are other examples of signs or sounds, that represent speed?

  5. You may already know how these signs communicate speed…

  6. … but can you tell what these signs are communicating about speed?

  7. Choose one of the signs and talk to your partner about the message it is telling about speed?

  8. 2.2 Relationships between distance, speed and time • An equation can be used to calculate speed, distance, or time if two of the three values are known. The letter V is used to represent “speed” because it refers to the word velocity (later we will learn that velocity is speed plus direction).

  9. 23 Relationships: Speed, Distance, Time 12/3/10 Page 36 What is the equation to calculate speed? Summary:

  10. Forms of the Speed Equation D (distance) V T (speed) (time)

  11. 23 Relationships: Speed, Distance, Time 12/3/10 What is the equation to calculate speed? Page 36 What are the different forms of the speed equation? D V T Summary:

  12. 2.2 Calculating Speed • To use a formula, remember that the words or letters stand for values that the variables have. • You can think of each letter as a box that will eventually hold a number.

  13. Calculating Distance from Time and Speed How far do you go if you drive for two hours at a speed of 100 km/h? 1. Looking for: You are asked for the distance. 2. Given: You are given the speed and the time. 3. Formula: distance = speed × time 4. Solution: distance = (100 km/h) × (2 h) = 200 km D (distance) V T (speed) (time)

  14. PracticeLourdes swam 50 meters in 10 seconds. What was her speed? 1. Looking for: 2. Given: 3. Formula: 4. Solution: You asked for speed You are given the distance and time V = d / t speed = 50 meters / 10 sec 5 meters/second

  15. PracticeAn object traveling at a speed of 45 m/s went a distance equal to 75 meters. How much time was needed? 1. Looking for: 2. Given: 3. Formula: 4. Solution: You asked for time You are given the speed and distance t = d / v time = 75 meters / 45 m/sec 1.67 m/s

  16. PracticeJim’s dog chased a neighbor’s cat at a speed of 2.5 ft/sec for 12 seconds. How far did the dog chase the cat? 1. Looking for: 2. Given: 3. Formula: 4. Solution: You asked for distance You are given the speed and time d = t x v distance = 12 sec x 2.5 feet 2.5 feet

  17. Wrap Up • Homework – 2.2A Speed • Due Tue 12/7 or Wed 12/8 • Summary – Explain the relationship between distance, time, and speed. 3. Flipper: • 2.2A Speed
