Creating Compound Subjects and VerbsExercise 19 • A cat’s coat protects its skin and provides insulation. • The outercoat and undercoat are parts of the cat’s coat. • The color, length, and texture of the coat varies by cat. • A cat’s whiskers help it feel its way in the dark and detect changes in wind direction. • The sense of smell and hearing is better in cats than in humans.

Phrase vs. Clause • A clause is group of words that does contain a subject and a verb. • As soon as she exited • Everyone talked about her
Independent Clause • An independent clause expresses a complete thought and can stand by itself as a sentence. • The sun set hours ago.
Dependent Clause • A dependent/subordinate clause does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone as a sentence. • When I read a book • Which looks like a dolphin
What words begin Dependent clauses? • Subordinating Conjunctions: after, as, before, although, since, while, because, when • Relative Pronouns: that, which, who, whom, whose
