  3. USA BNL:lab Physics (Management, Design, Integration, engineering etc) Chemistry (DAQ, electronics) Instrumentation (engineering, Gamma/pi0 design, front end chip) UCR (Simulations, management, software) ISU (Trigger, Simulations) UIUC (Simulations, Physics ideas) Nevis (chi – FEE readout) Korea (Si- pads/gammapi0) Yonsei Ewha SENS: company ERTI:company Japan Riken (lab) Czech Republic (Gamma/pi0 testing, constuction) Charles U Academy of Sciences Prague Tech U ON semiconductor:company Russia Moscow State U (Si pad design, testing, engineering) JINR-Dubna – 2 groups (lab) (Engineering, Mechanics, tungsten, assembly) MEPHI (front end electronics) Ekaterinbourg (company- board assembly) RIMST-ELMA (company-Si construction) Collaboration

  4. Management Plan • Operate in the structure of PHENIX • The “Forward upgrades group” meets and works together (RKS chairs meeting now) • Muon Piston Calorimeter (3<eta<4) : going in now • Muon spectrometer trigger (NSF MRI funding) • NCC • We will have to work out a management structure – once we have all the responsibilities assigned • For construction (EK) • For Money DOE/Riken/Other (RKS)

  5. 40x design luminosity for Au-Au via electron cooling Commissioning Long term upgrades FVTX, TPC/GEM, NCC PHENIX view of RHIC Upgrade Plans Long term: full detector and RHIC upgrades Near term: Base line Medium term: first upgrades 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 Analysis of data on tape Near term detector upgrades of PHENIX TOF-W, HBD, VTX , mTrig RHIC luminosity upgrade PHENIX upgrades Full utilization of RHIC opportunities: Studies of QGP with rare probes: jet tomography, open flavor, J/, ’, c, (1s), (2s), (3s) Complete spin physics program p-A physics RHIC baseline program Au-Au ~ 250 mb-1 at 200 GeV Species scan at 200 GeV Au-Au energy scan Polarized protons  150 nb-1 Extended program with 1st detector upgrades: Au-Au ~ 1.5 nb-1 at 200 GeV Polarized p at 500 GeV (start p-A program)

  6. NCC Funding • Small amount of funding so far for R and D • Riken, UCR, BNL, Local Russian funding for themselves, Czech for themselves (a fair amount) • What do we need? • R and D • I claim with $3M in cash we can build one side, with $7M we can build both sides • this might change as we do a better cost estimate in the next month • Purchasing Si and W now (~200K worth Riken) • Major funding • Riken $1M-$3M • DOE ~$4M - $4.5M • Other ~$1M • Major question - timing

  7. NCC Upgrade Schedule ScenarioEOB to BNL management: Oct 2005, RKS in LOI Today DOE, Japan, Russia,Czech ($4.0M+$4.0M+$0.5M???) doesn’t match funding schedule NCC2 Operational NCC prototype 1 test NCC prototype 2 test Begin NCC1 Construction NCC1 operational R&D Phase Construction Phase Ready for Data

  8. NCC Upgrade Schedule Scenarioupdated Nov. 2005 Today DOE, Japan, Russia, Czech, other ($4.0M+$1 to 3M+$1M???) NCC1 operational NCC prototype 1 test (Protvino) NCC prototype 2 test Begin NCC1 Construction NCC2 Operational R&D Phase Construction Phase Ready for Data

  9. NCC CDR • We want to appear in the 2007 budget • Need CDR to DOE by Feb • Dec – CDR to collaboration • Jan – review by BNL
