Cycle 2 Week3 2 Samuel
Context: • Same as 1 Samuel – the story carries on • 1 & 2 Chronicles = similar account of this period of history (Samuel & Kings) • Samuel/ KingsChronicles • Prophetic/ moral Priestly/ Spiritual • Historic Interpretative • Record Lessons • Judgments Hopes • Kings Priests
Context: • 1 Sam/Saul’s reign deals with the STABILISATION of the nation • Nation was in turmoil after the time of Judges • 2 Sam/David’s reign deals with the EXPANSION of the kingdom
Characters: • David – his rise and reign • “a man after God’s own heart” not because of his perfection but because of his imperfections made known and clear – God was able to use David • Romans 7 • Ishbosheth and Abner • Tamar, Amnon and Absalom • Mephibosheth
Plot Overview: • David’s rise to power (2 Sam 1-4) • David’s reign over all Israel (2 Sam 5-24) • God blessed obedient people who were lead by an obedient King. (2 Sam 1-10) • God judged Israel when the King strayed. (2 Sam 11-24)
Plot: • David crowned king of Judah: • Slow start – only king of Judah for 7 ½ years • Hebron – central in Judah • Civil war: • Ishbosheth king over Israel • 7 years of civil war • David’s kingdom grew stronger and Ishbosheth’s grew weaker • Abner – defects • Ishbosheth killed
Plot: • United kingdom: • Under David – 33 years • David anointed king over Israel and Judah • Moves to Jerusalem – central • Jerusalem became military capital – protection • When David brings Ark of the Covenant – Jerusalem becomes religious capital too. • David has great success
Plot: • The king strays: • Chapter 11 marks the beginning of David’s troubles • Bathsheba and Uriah • David saw, inquired and then participated • Kept it hidden for a year – Nathan exposes him • True repentance – Psalm 51 • Solomon is born – “Jedidiah” – God’s beloved
The king strays: • Even forgiven sin has consequences: • Death of his son • Tamar, his daughter, was defiled • Amnon, his son, was mudered • Kingdom divided – Absalom seeks to kill his father and then is killed • 2 Sam 12:10-14 • “killing and murder will continually plague your family” (Msg) • Absalom sleeps with David’s concubines and tries to kill David – “evil against you out of your own house”
Plot: • David regains the kingdom: • Mourns over Absalom’s death – rebuked • 2 Samuel 19 • The nation is immediately faced with hardship – famine (Gibeonites) • Psalm 18/2 Sam 22 • Takes a census – God didn’t command it • Pestilence in the land • Sets up an altar – right where Solomon builds the temple
Notes: • The Davidic Covenant: • Unconditional covenant • Chapter 7 • David wants to build a temple for God • David is a man of war, he cannot build a House for God • Solomon is a man of peace – God promises that although David cannot build it, his son will
Notes: the Davidic Covenant Promised to David: 7:10-14 • A great name • Rest • Both David and Israel • A lasting dynasty/house/kingdom • Lineage and the right to rule over Israel • A son to build God’s house • Solomon built the Temple • Even though Solomon made mistakes God made his name great
Notes: • The fact that the writers don’t only tell of David’s successes and wins but also his faults and failures validates scripture • Saul’s death: • 2 Sam 1 – it is said that the man was lying – trying to gain credit for killing David’s enemy • No one killed “God’s anointed” • David holds his conviction even with Ishbosheth
Notes: • Goliath: • 2 Samuel 21:19 • Its not Goliath but actually Lahmi – 1 Chronicles 20:5
Notes: • Mephibosheth: • Only living relative of Jonathan • David was faithful to his promise to Jonathan • He was lame • Invited to the king’s table and given incredible wealth • Picture of what Christ has done for us – God has not forgotten His covenant with His people
