Grammar Translation Method 2013 Fall Semester- Week 2
Introduction • 1. It was called the Classical Methods. • 2. It was used to help students to read and appreciate foreign language literature. • 3. It was hoped to help students become familiar with the grammar of their native language through the study of target language grammar.
Experience (1) • 1. Reading a passage: The Boys’ Ambition from Mark Twain’s Life on the Mississippi • 2. Read aloud and translate into native language (Spanish) • 3. Answer the comprehension questions • 4. Answer the inference questions • 5. Reading the questions and answer them
Experience (2) • 6. Vocabulary instruction • 7. Opposite word learning • 8. Instruction of cognate • 9. Grammar instruction: two-word verbs • 10. Word and idiom learning

Write a composition in the target language about an ambition they have • 15. Memorize the vocabulary items and write sentences of the for them • 16. Aquiz on grammar, vocabulary, and translation
Thinking about the experience(1) • Principles: • 1. The ability to communicate in the target language is not a goal of foreign language instruction. • 2. The primary skills to be developed are reading and writing. Little attention is given to speaking and listening, and almost none to pronunciation. • 3. The teacher is the authority in the classroom. It is very important that students get the correct answer.
Thinking about the experience (2) • 4. It is possible to find native language equivalents for all target language words. • 5. Learning is facilitated through attention to similarities between the target language and the native language. • 6. It is important for students to learn about the form of the target language.
Thinking about the experience (3) • 7. Deductive application of an explicit grammar rule is a useful pedagogical technique. • 8. Language learning provides good mental exercise. • 9. Students should be conscious of the grammatical rules of the target language. • 10. Wherever possible, verb conjugations and other grammatical paradigms should be committed to memory.
Review the principles and techniques • Answer the 10 questions based on the observation of techniques and principles • 9 techniques are reviewed: translation of a literary message, reading comprehension questions, antonyms/ synonyms, cognates, deductive application of rules, fill-in-the-blanks exercise, memorization, use word in sentences, composition
Conclusion and Activities • Conclusion: Is translation a valuable exercise? • Activities: • 1. Check your understanding of the Grammar-Translation Method? • 2. Apply What you have understood about the Grammar-Translation method.
