  2. Events are a great way to get the whole society together, to share a common interest or just enjoy yourself. If you are planning a BIG events, please take note of the following points:

  3. Budget • Always OVERESTIMATE your costs! • Don’t forget about VAT! • Make a spreadsheet of incomes and outgoings (get your treasurer to help with this) • Make sure all incoming money goes into your SOCIETY ACCOUNT

  4. Health and Safety As the organiser, you are liable if anyone gets injured or something is considered dangerous Email Rae if: • You are planning to serve food • You think you will need First Aid

  5. Marketing Make sure everyone in your society knows about your event by: • Email • Making a Facebook Event and reminders • Put up an advert on the electric noticeboards • Tell your Convenor who will put it on the Societies Calendar

  6. First Social • First Social of the year shouldn’t be intimidating • Play some ice breaker games • Organise a social to get everyone talking to each other – Go Bananas run team building evenings • Encourage Seniors to mix in with First Years

  7. Socials - Alcohol • If you are drinking alcohol make sure there is always an alcohol free alternative available and that someone is responsible for those drinking. • NEVER pressure students into drinking – some might not be confident enough to say no if they feel uncomfortable • Make sure you read the alcohol policy – can be found on society help page • Always offer alcohol free socials as well i.e. rollerworld, cinema, the zoo

  8. Trips • You are responsible for those you take on a trip • Make sure you complete a risk assessment – Rae can help you with this • If collecting in money – give your society a deadline earlier than yours to pay it – many won’t hand it in on time

  9. I Love Tour • Societies can go on ‘I Love Tour’ with sports teams – More information will be sent out at the beginning of the year • You can also organise your own tour – a guide will go online over summer to help you with this. • It’s a nice way to finish off the year before Final Year’s graduate and brings your society together.

  10. Tips for being a Social Secretary • Be organised – get everything ready well in advance of the Social • Ask for help – if it gets too much get your other exec to support you • Ask your members what they want – will help you come up with ideas and they’ll have more fun!
