  1. Circle of Power and Respect • The Circle of Power and Respect is a weekly whole-group gathering that builds community. The structure helps create a safe space where middle school students can meet face-to-face and build the trust and strong relationships necessary to their learning. • 18 minutes every 1st “M” day of the week • Rotate the period each Quarter

  2. Four Components of the Circle of Power and Respect • Greeting - To learn names, practice courtesy, and to acknowledge and welcome each other’s presence • Sharing - To get to know one another and practice the art of conversation • Activity - To have fun, engage, cooperate, include all, develop self control, and spark academic learning • Daily News - To greet, inform, and teach skills through posted, written information and student responses

  3. Our mission statement • Highlands Middle School mentoring program matches 7th and 8th grade students with caring adults and through shared fun experiences help them become engaged and connected to the school community.

Mentoring model • Group Mentoring • One adult mentor will be matched with a group of up to four students. • The group will meet once a week for 20 minutes during a shared lunch period • There will be 2 after school meetings per month • Team building • Fun experiences • Special activities • Field Trips

  5. Community partnerships • Westchester Knicks • Evening Basketball Game for mentors, mentees, and families • School Day Basketball Game for mentors and mentees • Knicks clothing and giveaways • Video chats or visit from Westchester Knicks Player

Yearbook Club Objectives • Precision of Photography through the Canon Camera • lighting, filters, settings, angles • Graphic Design • pages and spreads throughout the yearbook • Journalism • student led interviews • Publishing World • writing, editing, revising, designing, constructive feedback

Girl Talk Girl Talk (www.mygirltalk.org) is a peer-to-peer mentoring program where White Plains High School girls mentor middle school girls to assist them with the difficult transition from childhood to adolescence. Topics focus on building self-esteem, confidence, and leadership skills. Positive peer relationships, healthy body image, conflict resolution skills, and making safe choices are also discussed. • Alternate Wednesdays from 2:30-4:15pm • Open to all 7th and 8th grade girls at the Middle School

The longest running middle school newspaper in the USA • Meetings are afterschool on announced dates • Ms. Clare Smith is the advisor (room 008) • Any academically eligible student can participate • We need writers, editors, photographers, and students interested in learning how to layout a paper using digital software • Students can participate in other sports and clubs and still contribute to the paper – articles can be submitted digitally to Ms. Smith • We publish 4 papers per year

Anyone who is Interested in being ON STAGE in the Musical MUST be at the INFO meeting on NOVEMBER 7th, 2:30-4:15 Highlands Auditorium • AT THE SESSION, STUDENTS WILL: Play some Theatre Games/ Acting Exercises, Break out some Dance moves, and Sing a little • Discover what the show is for this Spring!! • Discover Where and When their audition will be • Discover What they need to do to prepare for the audition • Discover Why it will be loads of fun!

  21. Spring Musical Time Frame • Info Session – November 3rd, 2016- Musical is announced at this session. ALL interested students must attend if they think they will audition for the show • November – Dates TBA – Auditions • November 23rd – CAST LIST POSTED • December 15th – 2:30-4:15 – First Full Cast Rehearsal • Rehearsals January through March – one to five days a week depending on part/song/scene being rehearsed • TECH WEEK March 13-17th – ALL CAST AT ALL REHEARSALS EACH DAY, and PERFORMANCES of course. • There may be extended rehearsals during the last couple of weeks before the show

  22. VOLLEYBALL INTRAMURALS - Intramurals are run from April – May. Students will be able to improve volleyball skills and volleyball knowledge.  Please forward any questions to Coach Sette – jaclynsette@wpcsd.k12.ny.us

  23. Badminton & Tennis IntramuralsBoys & GirlsMeets mid-March - early June For tennis, students must get a permission slip signed by a parent/guardian that allows them to walk down to the Gillie Courts. Any levels welcome-rackets provided for those who need them. Coach Adams

National Junior Honor SocietyMs. Gordon & Ms. Powers • NJHS is an organization for recognizing and promoting the important qualities of: • Leadership • Scholarship – 91.5 average for 6th, 7th, and 1st quarter of 8th grades • Community Service • Character • Citizenship • Beginning in February students are offered an application form if their grade average is above 91.5 as stated above.  Applicants must complete the form in its entirety to be considered by the NJHS Committee.  The Committee meets to review applicants based on their qualities of leadership, community service, character and citizenship as defined by the National Junior Honor Society. • Students who are nominated by the NJHS Committee will be informed by letter in March. • The NJHS Ceremony will be held on April 22nd, 2020 at 5:30 pm

  28. Medical Eligibility Process for Modified Sports (Fall, Winter, Spring) Start of school year or 1st season participating: • Sign up on Family ID, which can be found on the District website. If necessary, families can pick up a blank New York State physical form from the Highlands Nurses’ Office. • Take the form to your child’s private physician to be completed at the time of the physical. As per District policy no other form will be accepted. Please note, many doctor’s offices provide these forms electronically and automatically. • Physical forms need to be turned into the Highlands Nurses’ office. Once the Nurse gives final approval, families/coaches will be notified through Family ID of student eligibility to try-out or join the team. 2nd sports season during same year (Winter season for example): • For each season, families must re-register on Family ID. • The nurse will verify their eligibility is current. * Blank Physical Forms can be found on White Plains School web site. Offices >Health Services> Health forms/documents >Health Appraisal Sports and Yearly * If the child requires an epi-pen, inhaler, insulin, etc., please make sure the permission to self-carry is checked off on the Permission to Administer Medication form. * If you are having difficulty on the familyid.com website, please reach out to family ID via: support@familyid.com or PH:781-205-7800

Homework CenterMedia Center (2:40pm-4:15pm)Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays • Starts mid- October – through late May • Sign up in the cafeteria during lunch • Meet in the Media Center hallway after school • Come with your binder, planner, and necessary materials • Snack will be served • Must have work for the entire session (including a book for silent reading) • Students must stay in Homework Center for entire session • R.O.A.R. Behavior is expected while in Homework Center
