1. First Aid Appointed Persons A one-day principles course for all including refresher training for qualified first aiders (Updated Feb 2006)

2. Introduction • course, safety and hygiene arrangements • resuscitation • control of bleeding • care of the unconscious casualty • shock and broken bones • choking in babies, children and adults • recognition of Illness • burns and scalds • record keeping • communication in emergencies

3. Domestics, Safety & Hygiene • fire routes, points and procedure • toilets, smoking and breaks • practicals require fitness • manikins are disinfected after each use • no HIV/HBV risk from CPR training

4. Responsibilities of a First Aider • assess a situation quickly • identify the nature of injury • give early treatment • arrange for ongoing care • stay with the casualty • make and pass on a report

5. Assess a Situation Quickly DR ABC DANGER RESPONSE AIRWAY BREATHING CALL FOR HELP

6. Danger • traffic • workmen • collapsing structures • group activity • water

7. Response • “What’s happened?” “OPEN YOUR EYES” • If there is NO response, shout for help now • If conscious, treat as necessary

8. Airway • Place 2 fingers under the chin • Other hand on the forehead • Tilt the head well back

9. Breathing • Check for up to 10 seconds • Chest movement? • Breath sounds? • Feel breath? • Breathing not normal  999 & CPR • OK Breathing  recovery position

10. Resuscitation • Open airway • Check for breathing • Call 999 • Give 30 chest compressions • 2 rescue breaths • Continue at rate of 30:2 until help arrives

11. The Recovery Position • Safe position • No strain on respirations • Prevents choking • Reduces strain on heart

Care of the Unconscious • Observe breathing • Observe pulse • Observe level of consciousness • Talk to them • Keep warm • 999 or medical help FISH SHAPED ABCDEFGH Faint illness, shock, heart conditions, sstroke, head injury asthma, poisoning, epilepsy, diabetes abc, bleeding, check pulse, dermis, eyes, feel to feet, go back to priorities, heed clues

16. Choking Babies • Up to 5 back slaps • Up to 5 chest thrusts • Repeat 3 times, then 999 • Repeat until help arrives • DO NOT FEEL AROUND THE MOUTH • NO ABDOMINAL THRUSTS • BE PREPARED FOR C.P.R.

17. Choking Children • Up to 5 back slaps • Up to 5 chest thrusts • Up to 5 abdominal thrusts • Repeat 3 times, then 999 • Repeat until help arrives • DO NOT FEEL AROUND THE MOUTH • BE PREPARED FOR C.P.R.

18. Choking Adults • Up to 5 back slaps • Up to 5 abdominal thrusts • Repeat 3 times, then 999 • Repeat until help arrives BE PREPARED FOR C.P.R.

19. Recognising Illness • Temperature • Fatigue • Confusion • Pain • Vomiting • Diarrhoea

20. Burns & Scalds • Remove the heat • Apply water – 10 minutes • Emergency shower • Leave burnt clothing • Remove scald clothing • Light dressing • 999 or urgent medical help
