Individual Giving Survey 2010 • The Northern Ireland Giving Survey 2010 was carried out between 5 July 2010 and 13 August 2010 • Based on telephone interviews with 1,000 individuals (aged 16 and over) who were asked about their giving behaviour over the previous month • Survey update undertaken in October 2011

  2. Key Results • 90% of respondents had made a donation in the previous 12 months • 83% of respondents had made a donation in the last four weeks

  3. Average donations • The average total donation in a four weekly period is £34.46 per donor and £28.59 per head of population. • The median donation per donor is £16.75 (+£2.75 on 2008) and£11.00 per head of population

Cash donations • Cash donations made in a place of worship continue to have a significant impact on the overall picture of giving • Donations made in a place of worship account for 31.8% of the total financial yield • This represents a decrease of 5.1% from 2008 • Excluding cash donations in a place of worship from the analysis, the average donation made is £25.35 and the median donation is £11.00.

Planned Giving • 35% of donors had used one of the various forms of planned giving in the four weeks covered by the survey • May help to explain the resilience of total giving in NI • Worthwhile investment in fundraising resources • Most popular reason for giving by planned giving is that it is easier to manage (61%)

  10. What causes do people in Northern Ireland give to? • Religious organisations 38% • Medical research 34% • Health 28% • Children 22% • Disaster relief 11%

WILLS • 3% of individuals surveyed had set up a will • Of those who had set up a legacy in their will: • 56% had a will that was for a specified amount • 36% had a will that had a proportion of the estate • Of those who do not have a legacy in their will: • 11% of individuals would consider setting up a charitable bequest • 24% may consider it when they make a will • 47% said it was not something they would consider

Attitudes and perceptions of giving and the sector • Over half of all donors (57%) agree that they are well informed about how their donations are spent by voluntary and community organisations. • 75% of donors feel it is important that a Northern Ireland based charity benefits from the charitable donations they make. • 66% of donors agree that regular communications from the charities they support helps build a personal relationship with the charity and its cause. • 68% of respondents mentioned the general public as a major funder whilst only 27% mentioned government. • 72% of donors agree that it makes sense for their charities to spend more of their donations on fundraising this year if it increases income in future years.

Individual Giving survey update – October 2011 • Significant drop in mean donation from £34.46 to £26.94 • Median donation drops from £16.75 to £8.00 • 48% of respondents had made a donation, such as bags of clothes or goods, to a charity shop • No change in legacy giving • Increasing internet donations • 22% have decreased their donations to charity or stopped them altogether
