REWARDS • REWARDSis a research-based and validated reading program that increases content-area reading skills by improving: • Decoding • Fluency • Vocabulary • Comprehension • Test-taking • Writing
Why REWARDS? • Student achievement is highly related to opportunities to respond. When students constantly say, write, or do things in a lesson, they are much more likely to learn from the resulting practice. • As in all academic and nonacademic areas, students are significantly more motivated if they experience success. Careful lesson preparation, intentional modeling of skills and strategies, and effective correction of errors are three teacher behaviors that increase students’ success.
Why REWARDS? • Develops strong foundational skills for improved test taking. • Closes the achievement gap for students who lack early foundational skills and enhances skills of students who are average to above average readers. • Applies strategies across all content areas to support student learning through academic language. • A scaffold instructional approach (“I do, we do, you do”) moves students from guided to independent learning. • The goal of the instructional design of the REWARDS program is for students to be successful in their content area classes as well as advanced placement courses.
Why Teach Secondary REWARDS • A number of studies have determined that students’ oral reading fluency is correlated with reading comprehension. As students read words more fluently, they can turn their attention from decoding to comprehension. This is particularly evident when Students are faced with real life academic language. (Taking the SAT, LSAT, etc.)
Independent Research Research 4th and 6th graders having difficulty reading longer words had significant gains when taught to use affixes and vowels to pronounce long words. (Shefelbine, 1990) 7th, 8th, and 9th graders who were taught a decoding strategy for reading long words had fewer oral reading errors and increased reading comprehension. (Lenz & Hughes, 1990)
How are Intermediate and Secondary different? REWARDS Intermediate For Students–Grades 4-6 25 lessons Word choice, reading and interest level - Grades 4, 5 & 6 Expanded instruction focusing on word relatives More in-depth vocabulary component REWARDS Secondary Students–Grades 6+ 20 lessons Word choice, reading and interest level–Grades 6+ Word relatives exercise Vocabulary exercise
Differentiation of REWARDS Plus • Use content textbooks or other texts to transfer reading skills for application into other areas and real world situations.

Data Collection • District Initiative • Individual schools may have their own data collection procedures • Managing data (Time and Forms) • Keep it simple
District Resource • SharePoint is a web-based resource available to the middle school developmental reading teachers that houses district resources related to the respective curriculum. • Teachers access it to download different files to support their curriculum. • http://sharepoint/dept/curr/msdr/
