  5. Voltaire

  6. Voltaire • Famous philosopher and writer (wrote over 20,000 letters, and over 2,000 books and pamphlets!!) • Very critical of the influence the Catholic Church had on French Society. He thought that the Church and the State should be separate. • Also thought that people should be free to express their own ideas. • How was this different that the society he grew up in?

  7. Rousseau

  8. Rousseau • Also a philosopher and writer, his ideas have had a massive impact on our society • As you have read, he was critical of civilization. • He thought that the movement away from nature caused major problems for humanity.

  9. Rousseau • Rousseau thought that private property caused people to move away from their natural way of being. • Thought that people should be more EGALITARIAN

  10. Montesquieu

  11. Montesquieu • Had strong ideas about how society and government should operate in France. • Highlighted the importance of separating power in government. • These ideas have had a tremendous impact on our society today.

  12. Censorship • These ideas had a tremendous impact on society. • Expressing these ideas at this time was very dangerous because the government was trying to CENSOR certain ideas. • They were trying to suppress DISSENT.
