PROPOSAL 6 • Hannah Conley • Alexandra Ellison • Jessie Perion • Audrey Warner 1
OFFICIAL WORDING • According to League of Women Voters: • A PROPOSAL TO AMEND THE STATE CONSTITUTION REGARDING CONSTRUCTION OF INTERNATIONAL BRIDGES AND TUNNELS 2
This Proposal Would… • Require the approval of a majority of voters at a statewide election and in each municipality where “new international bridges or tunnels for motor vehicles” are to be located before the State of Michigan may expend state funds or resources for acquiring land, designing, soliciting bids for, constructing, financing, or promoting new international bridges or tunnels. • Create a definition of "new international bridges or tunnels for motor vehicles" that means, "any bridge or tunnel which is not open to the public and serving traffic as of January 1, 2012." 3
Reasons to vote YES. • Michigan tax payers are going to end up paying for the expensive cost of • a new bridge that the state does not need. Michigan already has a large • debt, and the new bridge will only make the debt larger. • The tax money should instead be used to improve public safety and • education. • Democracy should be upheld, so the people should decide whether or not • a new bridge is built. • Agreement can be changed 7
Reasons to vote NO. • The main supporters of Proposal 6 are led by Manuel Moroun, the owner of the only international bridge to Canada • Another bridge to Canada would speed up and increase trade with the country • Canada is paying for all the costs for the New International Trade Crossing • The proposal creates a new definition of "international bridges and tunnels“ 8

Oh, and here’s the kicker… • “But because Canada would pay Michigan's up-front NITC costs and be repaid through tolls, Snyder and other NITC backers say Proposal 6 wouldn't apply because Michigan isn't spending anything.” • - John Gallagher, Detroit Free Press 10
