Ch 6 – Elizabeth’s Letter Henry Clerval gives Frankenstein a letter from Elizabeth His father and her are very concerned about his health. News from home: Dad doing well; Ernest wants to join military ( age 16) Back story: Justine Moritz, 12, used to live with Elizabeth & her Aunt, servant. Frankenstein liked Justine very much. She could cheer him up. Justine acted just like the aunt. They liked each other very much. Justine took care of them when Aunt died. After Frankenstein went to Ingolstat, Justine was called home by her mom who felt guilty (& all her children had died). The mom died and now Justine is back with Elizabeth. William, around 5, has a little girlfriend. Who’s getting married in Geneva. Write us!
Ch 6 – A Return to Health & Happiness He wrote Elizabeth but it wore him out. He couldn’t leave his bedroom for two weeks! Frankenstein takes Henry to meet M. Waldman (professor). When F gets praised he becomes upset. Henry notices and gets the conversation going in a different direction. (friendship) Why doesn’t Frankenstein tell Henry about the creature? They go see M. Krempe who also highly praised him. Krempe goes off talking about himself Henry (Clerval) had come to the university to study Oriental languages: Persian, Arabic, and Sanscrit. So Frankenstein studies them also to occupy his mind. He finds them soothing. Summer passed and F was supposed to go home in the fall but snow came and he was postponed until the next spring. He was anxious to go home and see his family/friends but winter was pleasant. It’s May and they are taking a farewell walk through Ingolstadt. Walking with Clerval raises his spirits and he is thankful for such a friend who can make him a better person. Clerval causes him to appreciate nature, and enjoy simple pleasures. Henry is happy to see F happy and he makes up stories to amuse F. He recites poetry for F, and got him into arguments to stimulate his mind.
Ch 6 quote “Idleness had ever been irksome to me, and now that I wished to fly from reflection, and hated my former studies, I felt great relief in being the fellow pupil with my friend.” DO these: compare & contrast Walton & Frankenstein in a Venn diagram Friendship – Henry took all the instruments and took down the lab for Frankenstein without him saying a word (he noticed). Henry is quick to notice eyes & feelings of others and noted Frankenstein was feeling uncomfortable so he was able to fake ignorance and get the subject changed. He never asks Frankenstein what it’s all about. Why? Do you think if Victor confides in him then it will make it all more real again and he won’t be able to handle it? Explain.
