  5. What is a Database? • A structured collection of data that can be organised. • Using computers & web interfaces to access the information stored in bibliographical databases.

Bibliographic Databases. • On-line search strategy • Search a bibliographic database • Use the citation & abstract to decide if relevant. • Locate the Journal (or book) • If it is an on-line journal that the College subscribe to – you must access it via a College computer. • Go to the Journal web site and view/download the article. • If it is not available online (or not subscribed to) make your request through the Library. • REMEMBER: most databases DO NOT link directly to on-line journals

Cochrane Library • The Cochrane Library is a collection of databases in medicine and other healthcare specialties • Provided by the Cochrane Collaboration. • Database of systematic reviews and meta-analyses • which summarise and interpret the results of high-quality medical research. • Searches all of Cochrane databases at once. • Featured databases are: • The Cochrane Database of Systemic Reviews (Cochrane Reviews) • The Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE) • The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) • The Cochrane Database of Methodology Reviews (Methodology Reviews) • The Cochrane Methodology Register (Methodology Register) • Health Technology Assessment Database (HTA) • NHS Economic Evaluation Database (NHS EED)
