  6. Plagiarism • The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language(4th Ed.) defines plagiarism as "a piece of writing that has been copied from someone else and is presented as being your own work.“ • The American Heritage Dictionary (2nd College Ed.) defines plagiarize as "to take and use as ones own the writings or ideas of another."  • IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) defines plagiarism as the reuse of someone elses prior ideas, processes, results, or words without explicitly acknowledging the original author and source. It should also be noted that certain corrective actions might apply to the uncredited reuse of someone elses ideas.

  7. Definition of Plagiarism Peraturan Menteri Pendidikan Nasional RI No. 17 Tahun 2010 tentangPencegahandanPenanggulanganPlagiatdiPerguruanTinggi. Bab 1 Pasal 1 Ayat 1. 9. The Scope of Plagiarism • Plagiarism as taking the whole work of others. • Plagiarism as many do copy-paste. • Changing a few words and sentences but still take the original sentence structure. • Paraphrasing from multiple sources and combine them Using words from the author's own work without making citation (auto plagiarism)

  10. The Scope of Plagiarism • Taking from some other source and mix it. Acknowledgment of the source does not exist or is not accurate address. • Too many quotes from various sources, so that the work itself become unoriginal. • Doing citation, but the results are too similar to the original source. • Include the citations in the text but not in the bibliography or otherwise. • It is not clear which ones are and which ones work the quote itself because it does not use quotation marks for direct quotes.

  11. Why Plagiarism Happens • Too easy to do. • Students do not know when it should and need to quote. • Students lazy to read and process analysis and synthesis. • Student does not make a first outline first, there is no sentence formulation research made in advance. • Lecturers have not taken seriously.

  12. How To Avoid Plagiarism • Always make a plan for writing the introduction, where there are research questions. • Create an organizational framework, so there is a picture section where we will put our support resources. • Always make citation sources if we are not sure. Understanding and mastering at least one citation models that simplify the process of writing without having to look at the citation reference models. • Consistent in using a particular citation models.

  13. In-text citation (Direct quote) Author and quote together • The principal stated clearly that students “needed parental Permission to leave school” (Abbott, 2005, p. 25). Author and quote separated • MacDougall (2004) stated that the “Information Literacy Model needed to be implemented” (p. 34). Quote from non-paginated material • Winkowski (2007) stated, “The research is unreliable” (Conclusion section, para.4).

  14. Direct quotation more than 40 words • Students at Nova Southeastern University have faced challenges in learninghow to use APA formatting. When discussing the challenges, Strunk(1922) stated: Use quotes around an article title or book chapter, but italicize the title of abook, journal, brochure, or report when used in the body of the paper.Use a short title in the parenthetical citation or complete title if the title isshort. NOTE Non-periodical titles like books and book titles have all their important words capitalized in the text citations, but these same book titles do not have all the important words capitalized in the reference list. (p.342)

  15. Research Writing Skill – Final Report • Final Report (LTA) is a scientific work to show the capabilities of a student in solving a problem / design a product or system in accordance with the disciplines embodied in the form of research papers or non-research.

  16. The Goal of Final Report • The goal is to enable the preparation of LTA students are able to gain experience and to try to apply or to compare the knowledge and skills gained in college with reality in the community. • students are able to analyze, develop, and implement science, knowledge, and skills gained during the research and writing LTA.

  17. Type of Final Report • Final Project conducted by the research and non-research. • TA based research serves to test the hypothesis (Quantitative Research) and answer the questions (Qualitative Research). • A study by the non-functioning, among others, to design / design products, systems, art, models, strategies, and policies.
