Element of the day • 97 – Berkelium – Bk • All but 1 element (Seaborgium) were named after scientists who were long dead, so the best way to name something and promote yourself it to name it after the place where it was discovered. This is the case with berkelium, named after the University of California, Berkley. • When elements decay, they give off alpha particles and energy, which transmutes them into lighter elements. Many radioactive elements eventually end up as stable lead, but pass through many other elements on their way. • There are no practical applications for berkelium.
