DESERT AEROSOL TRANSPORT IN THE MEDITERRANEAN REGION AS INFERRED FROM THE TOMS AEROSOL INDEX P. L. Israelevich, Z. Levin, J. H. Joseph, and E. Ganor Department of Geophysics and Planetary Sciences Tel Aviv University
Main sources for desert aerosol in the Meditteranean Positive values of the TOMS aerosol index averaged for the period August 1996 - April 2000
Maximal values of the TOMS aerosol index for the period August 1996 - April 2000 Main ways of the desert dust transport in the Northern Africa
Mean square deviation of the aerosol index = [(AI - <AI>)2]1/2
Aerosol index integrated over the ROI (top), over the source region A (center), and over the source region B (bottom)
Monthly probability of dust storm events near the source A (top), and near the source B (bottom).
TERRA-MODIS picture of the Northern Africa (enhanced contrast)
TERRA-MODIS picture of the Northern Africa (enhanced contrast)
Aerosol index integrated over Eastern, Central, and Western Mediterranean
Monthly probability of dusty days occurrence in the Eastern (top), Central (center) and Western (bottom) Mediterranean
Distribution of the aerosol index along the latitude 35.50 during the year 1999.
CONCLUSIONS • sources and transport paths of the desert dust have been identified using TOMS aerosol index • the whole North African region is permanently loaded with significant amount of desert dust during the period April-August • seasonal variations of dust appearance in the Mediterranean was found from the aerosol index distributions
