AP HUMAN GEOGRAPHYCH 30 CLASS NOTES Global Disparities in Nutrition and Health
GLOBAL FOOD PRODUCTION • FOOD EMERGENCY??? • Maybe in future: WHY??? • Pop. Growth, Urbanization, Energy costs, Climate change
FOOD DISTRIBUTION • Malnutrition – • ill health resulting from deficiency in essential foods • 1/6 of world is malnourished • Rich Countries = Fed Countries
Why Malnourished? • 1. Distribution systems fail • 2. Inability to pay costs • 3. Traditional cultural practices that favor men (disadvantage women & child)
Dietary Balance: (5) • Adequate supply of protein, carbs, fats, vitamins, minerals • Hidden Hunger: despite adequate caloric intake (carbs), certain foods are in short supply (proteins) = malnourished
Actions to Take to Avoid a Food Crisis • Is reason for concern!!! • National and International Scale: • 1. Formulate Population Policies • Family planning • 2. Sustain the Green Revolution • GE / GM products
3. Expand Farmlands • Less development • Reclaim dilapidated city lands • 4. Stimulate local Production • Small gardens • Rooftop Gardens
5. Encourage Land Reform • Who farms land = better farming • City farming (rooftops) • Vertical Farming???
6. Improve Food Dist. Systems • Transport infrastructures • 7. Develop Alt. Food Sources • Aquaculture (fish farms)
8. Strengthen INT. NAT. Controls on Ocean Fishing • Many countries overfish • 9. Reduce Meat Consumption • Healthier / more grain available • 10. Promote Social Change • Amend cultural practices • Equality for women
MEDICAL GEOGRAPHY • Study of health and disease in geographic context • Source, spread (diffusion), affect regions • Contagious Diseases – diseases that can be transmitted
Infant Mortality • Nutrition plays a huge part (development) • Poverty, sanitation, medical services • Low: ??? • High: ??? • (Map p. 462)
IMR Causes • Physical health of Mother • Poor Sanitation / Drinking water • More die cause parents not know how to cope with routine problems like diarrhea than because of epidemics • Leading killer (w/ malnutrition)
DISEASE TYPES • 1. Infectious Diseases • Invasion of a parasite (Malaria) • 65% of all human illnesses • 2. Chronic / Degenerative • Long term deterioration of body (cancer) • 3. Genetic / Inherited • Genetic Diseases (Down’s Synd.)
EPIDEMIC – • Sudden outbreak leads to high % of cases & deaths in a region • PANDEMIC – • When outbreak spreads around the world (influenza) • ENDEMIC – • Disease particular to a region or locale (mono in college)
DISEASES in BOOKp. 468-478 • Malaria • Yellow Fever • Sleeping Sickness • Cholera • Influenza • AIDS
