Areas of Concern (Old T191) • - 15.8% students did not find module interesting • - 24.2% students said that they did not enjoy module • - 74% of students spending more than 4hrs per week • - Students experienced difficulty with Time • Management • - 17% students experienced difficulty in managing • own learning & identifying preferred learning style • - Insufficient relevant Engineering content /context

T191 Module Revision (Oct 08) • Remapped transferable skills learning outcomes against new QAA Engineering Benchmark Statement /UK-SPEC (08) statement • New ‘Introductory Rationale’ included in prologue to explains role of T191 within BEng programme; more guidance on what is required; how learning outcomes are aligned to the activities/assessments and what constitutes relevant ‘evidence’ for portfolios

Number of activities combined/reduced from 59 down to 26 (56% reduction) with realignment to UK-SPEC • Amount of main text reduced by 40% into one binding • Introduced new CV (max 4 sides) linked to OU Careers • Included on-line ‘Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire’ (Felder & Silverman 1988) activity • Constructively realigned Key Skills self assessment task • Introduced new ‘Personal Development Planning’ activity for the ECA Portfolio

Developments Supporting the Engineering Pathway • Recruiting Students, in the East MidlandsLifelong Learning Network (LLN) • LEAP AHEAD (www.leapahead.ac.uk) Learners Employers And Providers Advancing Higher Education Accessibility & Delivery. WHAT & WHY: Mission- to increase participation in vocational Higher Education in the key economic sectors. Engineering one of 5 sectors. WHO: Partnership of HEI, FE Colleges, Industry Training Organisations & employers - supported by Regional Development Agencies (OU (East Midlands) is a partner)

LEAP AHEAD & the OU in the EM • HOW • ENGINEERING PROGRESSION AGREEMENT commitment* • Agreement between colleges and universities to provide learners with a clearer route into and through vocational education. • Agreement intends to deliver and increase in the number of learners progressing into and through Higher Education from vocational pathways (remove ambiguity and develop commonality). • OU Engineering Progression Champion: Keith McGraw (klm2@tutor.open.ac.uk) • * Many other activities supported by LEAP AHEAD programme (managed by the University of Derby).
