  1. Explorers By: Zachary Gross Mr. Drums Class 227

  2. Age of Discovery The Age of Discovery was when Europeans began to explore the whole world. Prince Henry was a navigator from Portugal who set off the age of discovery. He organized a school of navigation go train sailors so they can be explorers. He also developed a new ship to make longer voyages possible. He sent expeditions south to find a way to get around the continent of Africa and then to Asia. This is what he did. After that, a lot more explorers started out because they wanted gold and land.

  3. Life of An Explorer Some of the experiences that explorers had to face was death in lots of many ways. Food loss, people overboard, and shipwrecks. Magellan had to eat rats because of food loss and the bread had worms. He also faced many storms when he found the Magellan strait.

  4. Christopher Columbus In August 3 1492 Columbus left Spain with three ships called the Nina, the Piñata, and the Santa Maria with 90 men. They stopped at the Canary Islands for supplies then left after. On October 12th they spotted land and thought it was India but it wasn’t it was the Bahamas. Christopher named this place San Salvador. When he got there he saw people and traded lot of things with them. They also discovered lots of things and gave a disease to Native Americans which killed lots of them and it the disease came from animals. He later had 3 more voyages to America.

  6. Hernando Cortes In this section you’ll summarize what your Conquistador did while exploring. Include a picture of your explorer or a map of their route.

  7. Ferdinand Magellan This is Magellan’s Fortunately and Unfortunately story and below this arrow is his upside down signature. Ferdinand Magellan was a Spanish explorer. He wanted to sail to the spice islands. Fortunately they let him go on the voyage with 5 ships and 270 men. Unfortunately he thought the Pacific Ocean was smaller than the Atlantic Ocean. Fortunately he got to South America. Unfortunately he landed in a tribe of cannibals. Fortunately he didn’t get eaten and got away. Unfortunately he saw a nude giant dancing on the shore and singing. Fortunately he captured him and brought him on the ship. Unfortunately one day the giant saw himself in the mirror and fell back onto 4 men. Fortunately he went away from the Pacific Ocean and decided to sail across the world. Unfortunately when he almost sailed across the world he got torched by Indians and died.

  8. Navigational Tools The Sextant and Astrolabe The sextant was a navigational instrument which replaced the astrolabe and was used for measuring the angle between the horizon and the sun or a star in order to find out the latitude. The astrolabe was used to determine the altitude of the sun or other celestial bodies.

  9. Conclusion All explorers were brave and determined. Europeans got lots of things from exploring. They got slaves, new food, wealth, a bad disease, information, also etc. The Native Americans got smallpox, animals, loss of culture and religion, lost gold, lose power, and died.
