  2. I am, Gwendolyn Brooks—born July 7, 1917. I have loved literature and the freedom of writing since I was a young girl living in Chicago. Even though I was born into poverty, I have always valued education and all that it offers. My education has afforded me opportunities to teach at many colleges and universities throughout the US. During my lifetime I did not marry nor did I give birth to any children. Instead my writings have born my likeness. I am the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize and serve as a Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress.

  6. Gwendolyn Brooks' poem, "We Real Cool,"is short, but delivers a powerful message about dropping out of school. Brook’s use of repetition creates a tight, succinct and compelling tale. For instance, the strategic placement of “We”, hanging off of each line, provides a “pattern of rhythm that binds the lines together” (Ferguson) and forces the reader to pause and possibly consider the power of choices. According Brooks, the idea for the poem came when she passed a pool hall, saw seven boys playing, and wondered how they thought of themselves (Stavros).
